In den zwanziger Jahren locken Gastspiele der besten amerikanischen Bands, der besten Musiker in Paris, Amsterdam, London oder Berlin zig Tausende an. Über das Radio, über Platten, über Filme, Tanzbars etc. feiern die neue Musik und die neuen Tänze gerade in Deutschland wahre Triumphe. Der Trend setzte sich trotz Verboten, Verfolgungen, Behinderungen in der Nazi-Zeit fort: auch in den dreißiger Jahren wurden Jazz-Platten gepresst, deutsche Labels hatten ein erstaunliches Angebot von Count Basie bis zu Benny Goodman oder Duke Ellington, amerikanische Filme mit Swing-Einlagen wurden gezeigt, in einschlägigen Bars wurde »amerikanisch« getanzt, die jugendlichen »Swing-Heinis« demonstrierten feine englische Lebensart, und deutsche Orchester (wie Oscar Joost oder Heinz Wehner) ahmten ihre amerikanischen Vorbilder erfolgreich nach. Ab 1938 wurde die Situation erheblich schwieriger: Jazz oder Swing wurden als »unerwünschte« Stile unterdrückt, Benny Goodman z.B. durfte als jüdischer Musiker nicht mehr gespielt werden, im Radio waren nur noch deutsche Aufnahmen erlaubt. Der mörderische Krieg sorgte dann für das Ende jeder Art von Unterhaltungsmusik, erst recht der »fremdländischen«. Umso heftiger blühte sie in der Nachkriegszeit wieder auf, insbesondere in den amerikanisch besetzten Teilen Deutschlands, wo Jazz und Swing bald zum Alltag gehörten – dann aber schnell verflachten: als trivial arrangierte Schlagermusik, als Dixieland-Aufwasch. Der Jazz selber wurde eher elitär: als Modern Jazz, Bebop oder Free Jazz. Bis zum erstaunlichen Revival des Swing Ende der achtziger Jahre. „Der Schellack-DJ Stephan Wuthe schildert in seinem Buch den Alltag von Swing-Fans während der Nazi-Diktatur.
