In Frankreich vor der Revolution von 1789 spielt dieser anspruchsvolle Krimi des Argentiniers Pablo de Santis, der bereits mit "Die Übersetzung" (BA 11/00) und "Die Fakultät" (BA 8/02) sein Können bewies. Der junge Kalligraph Dalessius wird von Voltaire auf Schloss Ferney angestellt und bald mit gefährlichen Aufträgen nach Toulouse und Paris geschickt, wo skrupellose Dominikaner den Lauf der Zeit anhalten und die alte Ordnung wiederherstellen wollen. Bei der Aufdeckung dieser Verschwörung verliebt er sich in Clarissa, die Tochter eines genialen Konstrukteurs von Robotern, die perfekt lebenden Vorbildern nachempfunden sind. Auch von Clarissa existiert eine mechanische Kopie. Nicht nur in diesem Fall fällt es schwer, zwischen Schein und Wirklichkeit zu unterscheiden. De Santis benutzt wieder verschiedene Genres (Gespenstergeschichte, Krimi, Abenteuerroman), um daraus etwas ganz Eigenes zu kreieren. Dabei ist ihm ein skurriler, spannender und auch humorvoller Roman gelungen, der gekonnt den Kampf zwischen der Aufklärung und ihren düsteren Feinden widerspiegelt. Ab mittleren Beständen.
