Die Robinsonade der 6-köpfigen Schweizer Pfarrersfamilie, die im Sturm in der Südsee Schiffbruch erleidet, sich ans Ufer einer unbewohnten Insel rettet und sich mithilfe einiger aus dem Wrack geborgener Gegenstände eine Lebensgrundlage schafft, wurde vom Vater für seine Söhne geschrieben und ab 1832 in 4 Bänden veröffentlicht - gut 100 Jahre nach Defoes Robinson Crusoe. Obwohl der Roman im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert im deutschen und englischen Sprachraum sehr beliebt war, erschien 1962 die letzte deutsche (jetzt lange vergriffene) Ausgabe (BA 2/76). Die neue Version hat Peter Stamm für seine Kinder nacherzählt. Es ist nach wie vor ein spannendes Abenteuerbuch, das vom täglichen Kampf gegen Hunger, wilde Tiere, Wetterunbill und Mutlosigkeit erzählt, und mit der Flora und Fauna der Insel sachlich (aber nicht immer glaubwürdig) vertraut macht. Dennoch ist es Fiktion und vertritt eine deutliche soziale Botschaft: Eine so kleine Gemeinschaft kann in feindlichem Umfeld nur existieren, wenn jeder seinen Teil beiträgt und alle verlässlich zusammenstehen.
