Der israelische Autor S. Yizhar liest die ersten Kapitel seiner Autobiography "Auftakte" (Mikdamot). Regisseurin Anat Even begleitet seine Stimme mit ihrem Blick, setzt seine Worte fort und hält gleichzeitig dagegen. Der Autor beschreibt einen dramatischen Tag im Leben des Kindes Yizhar im Jahr 1917, einen Dialog in Liebe und Abrechnung mit seinem Vater, mit der Gründergeneration und dem zionistischen Traum. Even, die Yizhar als Teil der Gründergeneration sieht, untersucht diese Abrechnung rein visuell. Der Film durchfährt Israels zerstörte Landschaft, bewegt sich entlang der Umgehungsstraßen, verkleidet als Highways zum Zionismus, progressiv und rückwärts gewand, steckengeblieben an dem Punkt, den Yizhar, das Kind/der 80 Jährige, in "Auftakte" beschriebt - an dem der zionistische Traum gleichzeitig erfüllt und zerschmettert ist. Yizhar Smilansky (geb. 1917, bekannt als S. Yizhar) gilt als der bedeutendste israelische Autor des 20. Jahrhunderts; er ist Teil des literarisch-kulturellen Kanons in Israel. Seine Schaffensperiode umfasst mehr als 60 Jahre. Er skizziert die geographische und menschliche Landschaft Israels vor, während und nach der Gründung des Staates 1948 in einzigartiger Sprache.
