Als einzige nicht-westliche Nation unter den Großmächten nahm Japan eine Sonderstellung in der Geschichte der internationalen Beziehungen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Der völkerrechtliche und außenpolitische Diskurs Japans war tief von diesem Bewusstsein geprägt und kreiste in den Jahren 1919–1960 beständig um die Frage, wie Japan trotz Integration in eine heteronome Ordnung seine politische Autonomie in Ostasien bewahren könne. Während in den 1920er Jahren die Tendenz zur formalen Kooperation überwog, schlug die innere Distanz zur Zwischenkriegsordnung in den 1930er Jahren in offenen Widerstand um und manifestierte sich in dem Entwurf einer „großostasiatischen Völkerrechtsordnung“. Die Niederlage 1945 und der folgende Kalte Krieg führten Japan unter dramatisch gewandelten politischen Verhältnissen in die westliche Völkerrechtsordnung zurück. Anhand von umfangreichem Quellenmaterial zeichnet dieses Werk die völkerrechtliche und außenpolitische Diskussion der Zeit nach und erhellt so neben der Völkerrechts- und Diplomatiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts auch die Situation nicht-westlicher Staaten in der internationalen Staatenordnung heute
