"Fuente de placer y sufrimiento, el cuerpo humano es un mapa donde se imprimen las huellas de la cultura; m̀s que contar con una larga historia, es en s̕ mismo historia, inscrita en cada una de las instituciones que se dedica a su cuidado y custodia, pero tambǐn en los textos donde se encarna mediante diversas representaciones simb̤licas. En el presente volumen, Cuerpo, enfermedad y escritura. Narrativa mexicana del Porfiriato, se exploran algunas manifestaciones som̀ticas de diferentes pr̀cticas discursivas, emanadas en un contexto sociocultural marcado por los cambios provocados por el complejo y desigual proceso de modernizaci̤n en M̌xico a finales del siglo XIX. En el marco del apogeo de los anhelos desarrollistas del řgimen porfiriano, la hegemon̕a de ciertos saberes, en particular de la medicina, contribuy̤ al desarrollo de narrativas de evidente tonalidad m̤rbida, por medio de las cuales se expresaron fobias y compulsiones colectivas, as̕ como se cuestionaron, sancionaron y replantearon de forma creativa pr̀cticas textuales y culturales dominantes. Los agentes del campo literario no pudieron o no quisieron mantenerse al margen de ese movimiento, por lo que desarrollaron un imaginario colmado de figuraciones corp̤reas filtradas por la mirada cl̕nica; en ellas, recrear, manipular o enfermar el cuerpo devino un ejercicio esťtico y cr̕tico, a partir del que redefinieron no s̤lo su postura acerca de las caracter̕sticas y la funci̤n de la literatura nacional, sino tambǐn sobre el ejercicio de la letra y la misi̤n del escritor, en aquel momento signado por la incertidumbre del fin de siglo y por las nuevas diǹmicas generadas por nuestra incipiente modernidad."--
