Seit sie sich erinnern konnte, war das uralte, steinerne Waisenhaus, am Rande des Dorfes, das einzige Zuhause für die zehnjährige Mandy gewesen. Hier lebte sie zusammen mit dreißig anderen Kindern, die, wie sie, ihre Eltern verloren hatten, unter der liebevollen Aufsicht von Oberin Bridie. Diese versuchte, ihre Liebe und Güte gleichmäßig auf alle ihr anvertrauten Kinder aufzuteilen - dennoch verspürte Mandy bisweilen eine unbestimmte Sehnsucht. Ein Gefühl, das sie sich nicht erklären konnte - etwas, das aus dem sonst so munteren und lebhaften Mädchen eine Träumerin auf der Suche nach etwas Unbestimmten machte. Und dann eines Tages stand dieses Etwas plötzlich vor ihr: Mandy war über die Mauer, die den Graben des Waisenhauses umgab, geklettert, um das draußen liegende Gelände zu erforschen. Auf einer Waldlichtung entdeckte sie ein verlassenes, winziges Häuschen. Und Mandy wußte sofort, daß sie sich hier ihr geheimes Zuhause einrichten würde. Hier wollte sie Ordnung schaffen und einen kleinen Garten anbauen. Den ganzen Frühling, Sommer und Herbst über arbeitete sie an der Verwirklichung ihres Planes. Sie sammelte alle Gegenstände, die sie in ihrem Häuschen gebrauchen konnte, bastelte vieles selbst und machte so aus den unwichtigsten Kleinigkeiten wertvolle Dinge, mit denen sie ihr Zuhause ausstattete. Und manches Teil "lieh" sie sich auf nicht ganz korrekte Weise aus, und bisweilen mußte sie sogar schwindeln. Die Autorin Julie Edwards ist Millionen von Kinogängern unter dem Namen Julie Andrews als Star von "Mary Poppins", "The sound of music", "Thoroughly modern Millie" und zahlreichen anderen Filmen bekannt. Als Bühnenschauspielerin spielte sie Hauptrollen am Broadway in "Camelot" und "My fair lady". "Mandy" ist ihr erstes Buch, das sie ihrer elfjährigen Tochter Jenny Edwards zuliebe schrieb.
