Huntervierzig kleine Finken betreut Herr Moll in seiner Stadtwohnung: Schmetterlingsfinken und Goldbrüstchen, indische Tigerfinken und Zebrafinken aus Australien. Sie sind das Entzücken der drei Buben Wolfgang, Walter und Michael, die im selben Haus wohnen und so gern auch ein paar Tiere besäßen - wenn ihre Mutter es nur erlaubte! Eines Tages beginnen die merkwürdigsten Dinge zu geschehen - und Anlaß hiezu sind die hundertvierzig Finken! Ein Testament mit ungewöhnlichen Bedingungen bringt eine Wende ins Leben der Kramer, ein Mann namens Beran taucht auf, und die drei Buben erleben allerlei, was sie nie für möglich gehalten hätten! Die Kramer erfahren: alles Gute, das man anderen Menschen erweist, alle Freundlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft, die man verschenkt, kommt eines Tages - oft auf die überraschendste Weise - zurück, so wie ein Bumerang zu demjenigen zurückkehrt, der ihn mit Geschick geworfen hat.
