Der Autor ist eigentlich zeitgenössischer Komponist und hat für sein Buch ursprünglich ganz zwanglose Vorträge, die er vor einem musikinteressierten Laienpublikum gehalten hat, überarbeitet und neu zusammengestellt. Das Ergebnis ist ein äusserst unterhaltsamer und höchst kenntnisreicher Spaziergang durch die Musikgeschichte, beginnend bei Bach und Händel und endend in der Gegenwart. Die bekannten Namen sind alle mit ein bis 2 Essays vertreten, nicht-biografische Texte haben andere thematische Bezüge wie z.B. Kirchenmusik, Jazz, Kunstförderung, Geschichte der musikalischen Ausbildung oder bekannte Chöre oder Orchester. Die Zugriffe auf die einzelnen Themen erfolgen aus ganz eigenen Blickwinkeln (Dave Brubeck als Dr. h.c., Richard Strauss und die Frauen, Max Reger, wenn er heute lebte usw.), vermeiden gängige Klischees und machen neugierig auf mehr. Leider suggerieren Aufmachung und Cover eine eher fachwissenschaftliche Publikation, was schade ist, denn der Titel ist ein Lesebuch im besten Sinn und breit einsetzbar
