James Gordon Benett, der Chef der großen New Yorker Zeitung "New York Herald", beauftragte 1870 seinen Korrespondenten Henry M. Stanley, den in Afrika verschollenen "Missionär und Afrikareisenden" Livingstone zu suchen. Mit dem hier vorliegenden Werk bietet Richard Roth eine Bearbeitung der von Stanley im Englischen verfaßten Berichte dieser Reise. Roth will bei seinen jungen Lesern ein Interesse für die Bestrebungen der Forscher wecken. In 23 Kapiteln werden die Reiseerlebnisse und Erfahrungen Stanleys geschildert, der über Persien und Indien nach "Zanzibar" fuhr. Von dort aus trat er dann mit einer Truppe von 200 Soldaten und Trägern den Marsch ins Landesinnere Afrikas an. In Udschidschi fand er am 3. Nov. 1871 den totgeglaubten Livingstone und reiste mit ihm zusammen weiter. 1872 begann er seine Rückreise, während Livingstone in Afrika blieb, dort aber ein Jahr später verstarb. Dieser Band ist mit acht Bildern und einer Karte ausgestattet. (ED). - Der Lehrer Richard Roth veröffentlichte viele, meist historische Abenteuergeschichten. Im vorliegenden Band handelt es sich um eine stark zusammenfassende Jugendausgabe von Stanleys Reisebericht 'Im dunkelsten Afrika'. (HW) 〈dt.〉
