Content: In May 2009 the Leuven Institute of Early Christian and Byzantine Studies organized an international congress, with the title: "Encyclopedic trends in Byzantium?" Some 40 scholars discussed the concept of Byzantine "encyclopedism", a notion coined definitively in 1971 by the French scholar Paul Lemerle as a characterization of Byzantine culture for the period 800-1000: the emphasis was not on creativity, but on collecting and copying; until very recent times the term "encyclopedism" has been repeated rather rashly in all kind of publications. Many problems have been dealt with during our congress: e.g. what are the definition and characteristics of Byzantine "encyclopedism"? Does the Byzantine understanding of this notion differ from ours? Has this really been the main feature of the period studied by Lemerle? Do these compilations mirror the broader cultural atmosphere in Byzantium? Which are the strategies (theological, literary, political) playing a part in the Byzantine art of compiling?

Content: "The work begins with a collection of diverse prefatory material including the epigram naming Eugenios of Panormos (Palermo) in connection with the work, and Eugenios's own introduction, in which he defends the contents, saying that one should be willing to acquire knowledge no matter what its source and practice an allegorical interpretation of the work. In the Eugenian recension three prologues follow, translated from Arabic, which have originated during the long course of the work's transmission and development from its Indian sources. The reader encounters the prologues in the following order: the account of Perzoué's (Borzuya's) journey to India (Prologue A), the introduction to the work by Ibn al-Muqaffaʻ (Prologue B), and Perzoué's autobiography (Prologue C). The main text of the Eugenian recension of Stephanites and Ichnelates, as it is published here, is divided into fifteen chapters of unequal length and bears the hallmarks of the fluid transmission of the work"--

Note: The present volume represents an expanded twelfth century Sicilian version of Symeon Seth's eleventh century Greek translation of the Arabic work Kalīla wa-Dimnah, itself a version of the Middle Persian work known as the Fables of Bidpai. Content: The present volume is a Festschrift in honor of the distinguished scholar in Late Byzantine, post-Byzantine and Cretan Renaissance studies I. Mavromatis. The title Kalligraphos is indicative of the foundations of his scholarship, which lie in the fields of paleography and early printing. With manuscripts and early printed books as the primary material of his studies, Professor Mavromatis has produced several major works in the fields of Byzantine philology, Cretan Renaissance literature (especially Erotorcritos) and late Byzantine vernacular poetry. This volume includes a short preface and twenty-four articles by senior and younger scholars, former colleagues, collaborators, and students of Professor Mavromatis. The articles are loosely arranged in chronological order of their subject matter and treat issues ranging from Byzantine historiography going back to the 4th century CE to post-Byzantine Cretan poetry of the 17th century. This philological kaleidoscope features new editions and interpretations of hitherto unknown or little-known poems and texts.
