Axboe takes up a topic which has long occupied researchers in early medieval studies, namely gold bracteates, a type of decorative pendant with amuletic function. In his book, he illustrates the stilistic development of the bracteates and locates them chronologically. In addition, Axboe discusses the gold hoards of the 6th century and lists the bracteates discovered between 1989 and 2003. This is an indispensable reference work for museologists and academic researchers.
