    Description: Whether seeing a movie, listening to a song, or feeling a breeze on the skin, we coherently experience these stimuli as continuous, seamless percepts. However, there are rare perceptual phenomena that argue against continuous perception but, instead, suggest discrete processing of sensory input. Empirical evidence supporting such a discrete mechanism, however, remains scarce and comes entirely from the visual domain. Here, we demonstrate compelling evidence for discrete perceptual sampling in the somatosensory domain. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a tactile temporal discrimination task in humans, we find that oscillatory alpha- and low beta-band (8-20 Hz) cycles in primary somatosensory cortex represent neurophysiological correlates of discrete perceptual cycles. Our results agree with several theoretical concepts of discrete perceptual sampling and empirical evidence of perceptual cycles in the visual domain. Critically, these results show that discrete perceptual cycles are not domain-specific, and thus restricted to the visual domain, but extend to the somatosensory domain.

    Description: Cells regulate their volume in response to changes in osmolarity of both, their extracellular and intracellular environments. As stability of the cell volume is a compelling exigency for cellular integrity, techniques for a sensitive, time-resolved volume measurement of adherently grown mammalian cells attract considerable interest, especially in the field of cell physiology and biology. In this study we apply a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based biosensor for the comparative analysis of the volume responses of two renal epithelial cell types to non-isotonic challenges. The on-line, label-free and non-invasive biosensor format shows distinct similarities and differences in the reaction kinetics of the two cell types. Furthermore regulatory volume responses to the osmotic stimuli as well as their inhibition by Gd³⁺ ions can be observed with a high time-resolution. Limit-of-detection measurements indicate the high sensitivity of the sensor capable of detecting cellular volume responses of adherently grown mammalian cells to osmotic stimuli well below a bioanalytical relevant value of 5mOsm/kg. ; p. 798-804.

    Description: Two conjugated copolymers, PPTQT and PTTQT, were developed based on thiadiazoloquinoxalines connected via ethynylene π-spacer to thiophene units. PPTQT showed maximum hole and electron mobility of 0.028 and 0.042 cm(2)/V s, respectively, being the first example of an ambipolar semiconducting material bearing triple bonds in the polymer backbone.

    Description: The positional isomers of tert-butylnitroxide (NO) substituted 4,5,9,10-tetramethoxypyrene-based mono- and biradical are synthesized. While the biradical 2,7-TMPNO in which two NO radical moieties are attached at the nodal plane of pyrene adopts a semiquinoid structure, the 1,6- and 1,8-isomers of the same exist in biradical form. The tuning of the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions is achieved by synthesizing the positional isomers of the biradical while maintaining the same radical moiety as well as the π spacer.

    Description: A new class of macrocyclic metal-N(4) complexes [MN(4)](n) (M = Co and Fe) were designed and synthesized based on a triangular ligand. Their unique triangular trinuclear structure provides a high density of active sites and facilitates the reduction of dioxygen via a four-electron pathway. Among them, a [CoN(4)](3)/C catalyst (20 wt %) exhibits high catalytic activity and long-time stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions, superior to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Such structurally well-defined [MN(4)](n) complexes provide a platform for a new generation of nonprecious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for fuel cell applications.

    Description: Osteonecrosis of the immature femoral head is a condition that occurs spontaneously with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and after a traumatic insult from an unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis, a femoral neck fracture, or a hip dislocation. Unfortunately, femoral head collapse and deformity are potential outcomes of this disorder. The severity of the residual femoral head deformity has been shown to be the most important prognostic indicator of long-term outcome, with severe cases requiring hip arthroplasty as early as the third decade of life. Maintenance of femoral head sphericity is currently the main focus in the treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. The aim of current treatments is to restore containment of the femoral head, so that remodeling takes place in close conformation with the acetabulum. The ideal treatment would prevent or minimize loss of sphericity and containment1.     Description: The first neutral spin carrying hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivative is described. The conjugated phenyl nitroxide substituted HBC with five alkyl chains exhibits a positive magneto-LC effect in columnar hexagonal liquid crystalline phase as probed by differential scanning calorimetry and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Surprisingly, at 140 K the ΔMS = 2 transition can be observed indicating a thermally accessible triplet state between the neighboring molecules in the columnar arrangements.
