Content: The Montenegrins live in the republic of Montenegro in Yugoslavia and they are closely related to the Serbs. This collection contains four documents that provide a cultural history of Montenegrin society. The time period covered is from the eighteenth century through the 1960s but most of the materials are historical, dealing with the nineteenth century. Two are historical accounts by foreign travelers who visited Montenegro in the 1800s (Viallade Sommières and Wilkinson). Sommières was an officer in Napoleon's army which occupied the coastal province of Cattaro, and Wilkinson was an Englishman and Fellow of the Royal Society. Both works may be regarded as intelligence gathering trips, describing the terrain, roads, settlements, warfare, leadership, national character and sympathies of Montenegrins. The other two sources are ethnohistorical works by the ethnographer, Christopher Boehm. These focus on the social organization and values and feuding behavior of Montenegrin tribal society before 1900
Note: Culture summary: Montenegrins - Richard A. Wagner and John Beierle - 1997 -- - Montenegrin social organization and values: political ethnography of a refuge area tribal adaptation - Christopher Boehm - 1983 -- - Blood revenge: the anthropology of feuding in Montenegro and other tribal societies - Christopher Boehm - 1984 -- - Travels in Montenegro, containing a topographical, picturesque, and statistical account of that hitherto undescribed country - by Col. L. C. Vialla de Sommières - 1820 -- - Dalmatia and Montenegro - by Sir J. Gardner Wilkinson, F. R. S. - 1848
