    ISBN: 90-272-6229-2
Series Statement: Metaphor in Language, Cognition, and Communication ; Volume 8
Content: This book describes methods, risks, and challenges involved in the construction of metaphor and metonymy digital repositories. The first part of this volume showcases established and new projects around the world in which metaphors and metonymies are harvested and classified. The second part provides a series of cognitive linguistic studies focused on highlighting and discussing theoretical and methodological risks and challenges involved in building these digital resources. The volume is a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between cognitive linguists, psychologists, and computational scientists supporting an overarching idea that metaphor and metonymy play a central role in human cognition, and that they are deeply entrenched in recurring patterns of bodily experience. Throughout the volume, a variety of methods are proposed to collect and analyze both conceptual metaphors and metonymies and their linguistic and visual expressions.
Note: Preface and acknowledgements -- Fantastic metaphors and where to find them / Marianna Bolognesi & Kristina Despot -- Part I. New methods and digital resources for mining metaphor and metonymy in thought, language, and images -- Chapter 1. Content: The volume focuses on the interaction between figurative language, embodiment, and society and culture from various theoretical and applied perspectives and methodologies. It bears wit-ness to the vibrancy of research into figurative language and the role of embodiment, with conceptualization motivated not just by our physical interaction with the external world, but also by social and cultural phenomena. The topics explored here include the impact of figura-tion on all levels of linguistic analysis, including grammar, discourse, and the relationship be-tween language and emotions.

Series Statement: Figurative thought and language (FTL) Volume 16
Content: "The contents of the volume prove the vitality of cognitive linguistic studies of figuration when combined with new research methodologies, in tandem with other disciplines, and also when applied to an ever broader range of topics. Individual chapters are concerned not only with some fundamental issues of defining and delimiting metaphor and metonymy, with the impact of figuration on grammatical forms, but are also exemplary discussions of how figurative language is processed and understood, as well as studies of practical ramifications of the use of figurative language in various types of discourse (the language of media, politics and healthcare communication). Most of the volume assumes a synchronic perspective, but diachronic coverage of processes is not missing either. In short, the volume demonstrates how rewarding it is to return to the true origins of cognitive linguistics for new inspiration and take a fresh start promising a true cornucopia of future results"
Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Figurative thought and language research in the 21st century: back to the future / Mario Brdar and Rita Brdar-Szabó -- Modeling figurative thought and language. Important challenges in the study of metaphors / Raymond W. Gibbs -- A Cognitive Grammar approach to 'metonymy' / Cristiano Broccias -- Targetting metonymic targets / Mario Brdar and Rita Brdar-Szabó -- The impact of figurative thought on linguistic structures. The effect of figurative thought on basic level categorization: how categories come to be formed and named / Gábor Győri -- Reconsidering accounts of the grammaticalization of auxiliaries: the cases of be-going-to and have-perfect / Frank Polzenhagen -- Physical and communicative force in Caused-Motion constructions: what they entail and what they implicate / Klaus-Uwe Panther -- Processing of figurative language. Two case studies on irony: embodied simulations and verbal irony comprehension / Herbert L. Colston, Michelle Sims, Maija Pumphrey, Eleanor Kinney, Xina Evangelista, Nathan Vandermolen-Pater and Graham Feeny -- Verbal and situational irony: on the conceptual mechanisms underlying two patterns of irony / Branimir Belaj and Goran Tanacković -- Figurative thought and language in use. Metonymies of migration: media discourse about and by migrants / Theresa Catalano and Linda R. Waugh -- Draining the swamp: creative figurative language in political discourse / Sanja Berberović and Nihada Delibegović Džanić -- Being in the same boat, in two ways: conflict metaphors in health care / Ágnes Kuna, Naike Bochatay, Sara Kim and Márta Csabai.
