In this article the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 is evaluated in the terms of Clausewitz's penetrating and classic analysis of the relationship of war and policy. Accordingly the Israeli decision tragically illustrated the outfalls present when the necessary analysis was not performed, when emotion and ideological zeal were allowed to supplant good judgement.
