    Series Statement: Global Political Thinkers
Content: Introduction -- Chapter 1: An Intellectual of the Americas: Carlos Saavedra Lamas’ vision for peace -- Chapter 2: Adolfo Pérez Esquivel: Grassroots movements and Human Rights -- Chapter 3: The International Political Thought of Alfonso García Robles -- Chapter 4: Oscar Arias and Reconciliation in Central America -- Chapter 5: Rigoberta Menchú: Peacebuilding through respect for diversity -- Chapter 6: Juan Manuel Santos: Colombian diplomacy for peace (2010-2018) -- Chapter 7: Javier Pérez de Cuellar: United Nations -- Conclusion.
Content: “This welcomed and important book immensely enriches the literatures on peace studies, Global IR, and Latin American contributions to international society. It focuses upon seven Latin American Nobel Peace recipients ranging from Carlos Saavedra Lamas (1936) to Juan Manuel Santos (2016), and their impact on ideas and practices of peace in Latin America and beyond, including issue-areas such as mediation and diplomacy, human rights, nuclear disarmament, indigenous rights, peacekeeping, reconciliation, and ending civil wars.” — Prof. Arie M. Kacowicz, Chaim Weizmann Chair in International Relations, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel “From the social activism of Rigoberta Menchú to the global initiatives of UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, this book explores the connection between the power of ideas and the actions of peace leaders to build a better world. The authors’ analyses serve as a reminder to academics and diplomats of the importance of taking small and large steps to manage and transform conflict and create institutions with a human focus.” — Ambassador Claudia Fuentes Julio, Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland This book analyzes the contributions of seven Latin American peace actors to reconciliation and conflict resolution: Carlos Saavedra Lamas, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Alfonso García Robles, Óscar Arias Sánchez, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Juan Manuel Santos, and Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. Working within an eclectic conceptual approach to systematize the difusion of their ideas, the chapters build upon three fundamentals of mainstream constructivism: a) change across time and space in each peace actor’s lifetime; b) socialization through changing norms, rules, and language; and c) processes of interaction in which they chose strategies and built networks. In their respective historical times, their views and ideas transcended the confines of Latin America to influence global political thought and produce change that favored peace. Roberto Domínguez is Professor of International Relations at Suffolk University, USA. Andrea Oelsner is Associate Professor and Director of the Political Science and IR Programs at the University of San Andrés, Argentina.

Series Statement: The European Union in international affairs
Content: "This book analyzes the relations between two geographical areas with different levels of regional institutionalization: the European Union and Latin America. Taking place in a neoliberal setting and characterized by low interdependence and asymmetry, this relationship operates at different levels that reflect the geometry of three institutional channels of bi-regional cooperation. First, EU-Latin American summits that involve a broad interregional arrangement of programs and include all the member states of this relationship. Second, EU association agreements with two Latin American countries and one sub-region, which focus on three main pillars (political dialogue, trade and cooperation). And third, free trade agreements as an alternative to cases where association agreements cannot be reached with individual Latin American countries or sub-regions in the medium term. The book argues that despite structural limits inherent to the bi-regional relationship, both parties are developing a variety of mechanisms to advance their interests and eventually forge common preferences for further cooperation in the Euro-Latin American area"--

Content: This book explores why the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) remains a largely unknown entity as far as the general public are concerned, despite its significant day-to-day activity not only on the diplomatic front, but also via its 16 field operations. While the main achievement of its predecessor, the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), was to bridge the East-West divide in Europe during the Cold War, the CSCE was transformed into the OSCE in 1995 to respond to the various challenges generated by the emergence of a multipolar world. Ever since, the OSCE has been involved in diplomacy, empowered with instruments of persuasion rather than coercion. Is the OSCE a significant regional organization in dealing with international security? Has the OSCE been able to reinvent itself to face the post-Cold War world? What type of security is the OSCE providing to its member states? This book provides a variety of answers based on different theoretical perspectives and invites the reader to reflect on the nature of soft power within international relations."--page [4] of cover

Content: "An indispensable, well documented and in-depth analysis of UE-Latin American relations as seen by renowned experts and policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic." --Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera, Former President of Costa Rica "This comprehensive Handbook offers a rigorous and updated analysis of the EU-Latin America relationship, addressing key challenges and opportunities. An indispensable reference for stakeholders interested in strengthening this strategic bi-regional partnership¨ --Antonia Urrejola, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile "Latin America and the EU have significantly contributed to peace, democracy, and global development through mutual relations and cooperation. This handbook provides fresh, informed analysis, making it an essential resource for study and constructive policy-making." --Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General of UNCTAD This Handbook explores the interactions within the Euro-Latin American region and analyzes the interests, norms, and practices of actors influencing the governance of interregional issues and policies. The chapters examine how states and non-state players in the Atlantic region tackle issues related to asymmetries, development disparities, and adaptation to the global system. Eight sections cover the unique characteristics of the interregional connections between the European Union (EU) and Latin America. The first examines multiple perspectives on defining and understanding Euro-Latin American Space, and the second continues with explaining the role of three leading EU institutions in the relationship with Latin America. EU relations with Latin American regions and some individual countries are the subject of sections three and four. The economic and political bi-regional agendas are explored in sections five and six. This Handbook closes with two sections focused on the societal experiences and the role of external actors.
