Content: The Rites Controversies in the Early Modern World is a collection of fourteen articles focusing on debates concerning the nature of “rites” raging in intellectual circles of Europe, Asia and America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The controversy started in Jesuit Asian missions where the method of accommodation, based on translation of Christianity into Asian cultural idioms, created a distinction between civic and religious customs. Civic customs were defined as those that could be included into Christianity and permitted to the new converts. However, there was no universal consensus among the various actors in these controversies as to how to establish criteria for distinguishing civility from religion. The controversy had not been resolved, but opened the way to radical religious scepticism. Contributors are: Claudia Brosseder, Michela Catto, Gita Dharampal-Frick, Pierre Antoine Fabre, Ana Carolina Hosne, Ronnie Po-Chia Hsia, Giuseppe Marcocci, Ovidiu Olar, Sabina Pavone, István Perczel, Nicholas Standaert, Margherita Trento, Guillermo Wilde and Ines G. Content: Drawing on original research covering different periods and spaces, this book sets out to appreciate the specific place of images in the history of evangelisation in the long modern period. How can we reconceptualise the functions of the visual mediation of the gospel message, both in terms of the production and reception of this message and in terms of its effective mediators, artists, religious, and cultural ambassadors? The contributions in this book offer multiple geographical and historical insights regarding the circulation of the image on the global scale of the Christianised world or the world in the process of being Christianised, from China to Iberia. Combining the contribution of historians and art historians, the authors highlight the points of intercultural encounter and tension around preaching, catechesis, devotional practices and the propagandistic use of images.00Through its aesthetic and social study of the image, and by examining the inner and outer borders of Europe and the mission lands, 'Eloquent Images' contributes significantly to the history of evangelisation, one of the major dynamics of the first European globalisation.

Content: In recent decades the topic of the body has come to occupying a marginal place to occupy priviledged one within the historical panorama. As a historical question it constitutes the first step in addressing broader social problems. It is in this sense that this thesis looks to find outline and elucidate how the female body was thought of and how its irnagery (or mental images) was constructed and how the corporal experience in the ambit of religious conventual life in Mexico City during the XVII century was like. Namely, which were the corporal models that women who lived during that period identified themselves with and the instruments, the techniques and the means that were followed to,achieve this. How does this society imagine the body of a woman and organize the représentations that make in intelligible. The importance of this research topic is not to be made less ; the importance of the body is evident for women, who throughout history, have been defined, associated and confused with their body

Content: Joaquin Camaño was a Jesuit from Paraguay, who lived in exile in Italy for most of his life from 1767 to 1820. His work and his fame can be considered of smaller importance if compared to many other Jesuits exiled following orders from Carlos III in Emilia-Romagna (1767). Through my search I explore in depth the role of J. Camaño, a smaller character who becomes part of the life of the others expelled through a dynamic "network report" of which he was one of the principal craftsmen. My objective has been to study the impact that these the American Jesuit exiles had, through the life of Joaquin Camaño, on the italian intellectual world, european and american after 1767. Camaño, with his studies, it is inserted in the renewed and vivacious rhetoric of the "Nuovo Mondo" which in those years assumed great dynamism. Born in La Rioja, Argentina, he grew up as a bright cartographer and linguist in the context of the European illustration thanks to his particular life as a missionary. After his expulsion, Joaquin Camaño, together with numerous other American brethren, arrived in Faenza, in the Papal State, devoting himself to the study of cartography and of the American languages. He found his place in a neuralgic moment for the history of linguistics, when direct observation and theoretical reflection of the phenomena were measured with the great human variety which by then were to be found in the world
