Längst wird die Materialität der Dinge nicht mehr als zweitrangige, dem Geistigen untergeordnete Qualität verstanden. Mit deren fundamentaler Bedeutung für die Genese, Erhaltung und Wahrnehmung von Kunstwerken beschäftigen sich von jeher die Konservierung-Restaurierung und in jüngerer Zeit die sogenannte Technical Art History. Seit den 1990er-Jahren rücken Materialien und Techniken auch stärker in den Fokus der Kunstgeschichte. Angesichts der zunehmenden Medienvielfalt, eines erweiterten Werkbegriffs und eines gewandelten Verständnisses von Kreativität gilt das Interesse der Forschung vermehrt Aspekten der Materialveränderung, des Temporalen und Prozesshaften. Das zeigt sich exemplarisch in den Beiträgen dieses Bandes
