Content: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research

Content: Goldin's study explores the relationships between men and women within Jewish society living in Germany, northern France and England among the Christian population over a period of some 350 years. Looking at original Hebrew sources to conduct a social analysis, he takes us from the middle of the tenth century until the middle of the second half of the fourteenth century, when the Christian population had expelled the Jews from almost all of the places they were living. Particularly fascinating are the attitudes towards women, as well as their changes in social status. By examining the factors involved in these issues, including views of the leadership, economic influences, internal power politics and gender struggles, Goldin's book provides a greater understanding of the functioning of these communities. This volume will be of great interest to historians of medieval Europe, gender and religion

Content: "The social structure of medieval Jewry was dominated by men who did not regard women as sharing equal status, and who took responsibility for the entire community, women included. This leadership sought to strengthen the family, the backbone of Jewish society, while attempting to improve their security within the Christian society which was seeking to displace them. However, this wider aim required improvement in status for women, which would provoke internal opposition within the Jewish community. Goldin's study depicts a social conflict within a community, a conflict that was gender oriented, but primarily social in nature. The twelfth century witnessed fundamental changes in the status of Jewish women in terms of their relationships with their husbands and within the family. The prohibiting of polygamy and divorce without the woman's consent gave rise to a quiet revolution. This engaging study looks closely at the changing attitudes towards women and the changes in her social status. Goldin highlights the case of Licoricia of Winchester, who in 1240 married David of Oxford, one of the wealthiest Jews in England - a moneylender whose clients included the King himself. Licoricia was very active with her husband in their joint enterprises. Four years after their marriage, David died leaving her with so vast a fortune that a royal decree was issued for her arrest and she was placed in the Tower of London. Using original Hebrew sources, this engaging study explores the relationships between men and women within Jewish society and the examinable factors in the functioning of community."--Publisher's website

Content: Parallel to the Halakhic laws, the minhagim (customs) are dependent on local practices and the regional schools of sages and rabbis. The minhagim played a decisive role in the history of the Jewish communities and in the formation of traditions of religious rulings. They gave stability, continuity, and authority to the local institutions. The impact of Jewish custom on daily life cannot be overestimated. Evolving spontaneously as an ascending process, it presents undercurrents that emanate from the folk, gradually bringing about changes that eventually become part of the legislative code. It further reflects influences of social, cultural, and mythological tendencies and local historical elements of every-day life of the period. The aim of this volume is to examine the concept of minhag in the broadest sense of the word. Focusing on the relationship between various types of customs and their impact on every aspect of Jewish life, the volume studies the historical, anthropological, religious, and cultural development and function of rites and rituals in establishing the Jewish self-definition and the identity of the local communities that adhered to them. The volume's articles cover the subject of custom from three perspectives: an analysis of the theoretical and legal definition of custom, an analysis of the social and historical aspects of custom, and an anecdotal study of several particular customs. Customs are a wonderful historical prism by which to examine fluctuations and changes in Jewish life
