The controversies surrounding Claude Pajon which disturbed the Huguenot world in two separate phases during the second half of the seventeenth century may as such be well-known, but the details of the course of these disputes have remained obscure. In every historical reconstruction of the first controversy (1665-1667) one can find either or both of the following assumptions. First, that the sermon Claude Pajon preached before the synod of Anjou (1665) lay at the root of the upheavals that followed; second, that Pierre Jurieu was from the very beginning Pajon's principal opponent. This article demonstrates that both theses are unfounded at best, and seeks to re-examine the course of events in this first period of the Pajonist controversies which ended with Pajon's departure from the academy of Saumur to become a pastor in Orléans. Special attention has been given to identifying the surviving archival materials that pertain to this episode in French Protestantism, as well as shedding light on their authorship, date and context of composition.
