Content: Publisher's description: Bumblebees have always been favored subjects for scientific study, but research has accelerated in recent years. Many new discoveries have been made with regard to their ecology and social behavior. The last twenty years has seen the commercialization of bumblebee breeding or pollination, and the invasion of new parts of the globe by bumblebee species, with potentially far-reaching consequences. Despite this, there is a great deal that we do not know about bumblebees. Their nests are hard to locate, so that those of some species have never been found. Fundamental aspects of the behavior of many species, such as mating, have never been seen. Bumblebees are undergoing a widespread decline, but his has not yet caught the attention of the general public to the same extent as, for example, the plight of rare butterflies or birds. But bumblebees are probably of far greater ecological and economic importance than these groups because the pollination of crops and the survival of many wildflowers depend upon them. This book attempts to draw attention to the importance of conserving dwindling bumblebee populations. It synthesizes the current state of knowledge of the behavior and ecology of these fascinating and charismatic organisms, and identifies some of the many gaps that remain in hope of stimulating further research.

Content: " Brought to you by Penguin. Insects are essential for life as we know it. As they become more scarce, our world will slowly grind to a halt,we simply cannot function without them. Drawing on the latest ground-breaking research and a lifetime's study, Dave Goulson reveals the shocking decline of insect populations that has taken place in recent decades, with potentially catastrophic consequences. He passionately argues that we must all learn to love, respect and care for our six-legged friends. Eye-opening, inspiring and riveting, Silent Earth is part love letter to the insect world, part elegy, part rousing manifesto for a greener planet. It is a call to arms for profound change at every level - in government policy, agriculture, industry and in our own homes and gardens. Although time is running out, it is not yet too late for insect populations to recover. We may feel helpless in the face of many of the environmental issues that loom on our horizon, but Goulson shows us that we can all take simple steps to encourage insects and counter their destruction. 169 Dave Goulson 2021 (P) Penguin Audio 2021 "

Rezension(3): "Mark Cocker, Financial Times:A powerful book" Rezension(4): "Daily Telegraph:Thoughtful, frightening and yet hugely enjoyable... This book will make you think differently about our right of dominion over the planet" Rezension(5): "Financial Times:If Silent Earth contains a single incontestable message it is that nature - insects, flowers, plants, trees, birds and mammals, including our species - is a single system... This powerful book tells us that we need to act as if we understand this essential truth" Rezension(6): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: June 21, 2021 Entomologist Goulson ( The Garden Jungle ) decries “alarming declines” in world insect populations in this perhaps too impassioned treatise. A drastic drop in bug life is catastrophic for biodiversity and “all terrestrial and freshwater food chains,” Goulson warns, and the reasons come down to climate change, habitat loss, overuse of pesticides, and the spread of invasive diseases. Touting insects as “the rivets that keep the ecosystem functioning,” the author envisions an “impoverished and degraded” bugless Earth and points out problems already popping up in China, Bengal, and Brazil, where farmers must hand-pollinate their crops because of a bee shortage. Insects service 87% of flora, he writes, and they provide food to nearly 80% of humans . Though Goulson makes a strong case, his haughty tone (“I am not... religious, but if you are, consider this,Do you really think God created wonderful diversity... so that we could exterminate it?”) and vague conjecturing (“I would guess that more than 90 percent of the world’s population do not think at all about environmental issues”) detract from his message’s urgency. Goulson’s enthusiasm for the insect world is evident, but it also unfortunately drowns out the science."
