    Description: Dr Haley and colleagues described a patient with Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD) in a JAMA Clinical Challenge article. The authors stated that long-term topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus could be applied to control HHD because they lacked the adverse effects of topical corticosteroids. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory in 2005 about a potential cancer risk associated with the use of tacrolimus, based on animal studies and case reports in a small number of patients. Although the finding is controversial, the number of patients in whom cancer developed after TCI therapy has been increasing.

    Description: Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) electrode catalysts with improved electrochemical properties have been prepared by dispersing platinum–tin (Pt–Sn) nanoparticles onto graphene sheets. During the deposition, a majority of the oxygenated functional groups on the graphene oxide nanosheets were removed, resulting in the formation of graphene. Microstructural characterization shows that metallic Pt, Pt–Sn alloy and tin dioxide (SnO ) nanoparticles were distributed on the graphene sheets, representing different lattice planes during the synthetic process. In terms of the electrocatalytic properties, graphene-supported Pt–Sn and graphene-supported Pt catalysts exhibited much higher current densities compared with that of commercial carbon black-supported Pt catalysts. Graphene-supported Pt–Sn increased the electrocatalytic activity, which is strongly influenced by the addition of Sn in its alloyed and oxidized forms, boosting the reaction more readily because of the lower oxidation potential.

    Description: Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC)-based gel was developed as potential topical system for flurbiprofen (FP) topical delivery. The characterizations of the prepared semisolid formulation for topical application on skin were assessed by means of particle size distribution, zeta potential analysis, X-ray analysis, in vitro percutaneous penetration, rheological study, skin irritation test, in vivo pharmacodynamic evaluation and in vivo pharmacokinetic study. The NLC remained within the colloidal range and it was uniformly dispersed after suitably gelled by carbopol preparation. It was indicated in vitro permeation studies through rat skin that FP-NLC-gel had a more pronounced permeation profile compared with that of FP-loaded common gel. Pseudoplastic flows with thixotropy were obtained for all NLC-gels after storage at three different temperatures. No oedema and erythema were observed after administration of FP-NLC-gel on the rabbit skin, and the ovalbumin induced rat paw edema could be inhibited by the gel. The maximum concentration in plasma was 29.44 μg/ml and 2.49 μg/ml after oral and topical administration, respectively. While the amount of drug accumulated in skin after topical application was much higher than oral application. In conclusion, NLC-based gel could be a promising vehicle for topical delivery of FP.

    Description: We successfully synthesized the copper-based pnictide LiCu(2)P(2), which was reported as a superconductor with T(c) = 3.7 K before. The temperature dependence of resistivity and DC magnetization was measured on both polycrystalline and single-crystalline LiCu(2)P(2). However, our repeatable synthesizing and measurements showed no superconducting transition either in resistivity or DC magnetization above 2 K. A metallic behavior can be seen in resistivity, and a Curie-Weiss behavior was observed in DC magnetization from 2 to 300 K. We have also carried out the Hall effect and MR measurements on the sample, from which we conclude that the LiCu(2)P(2) has a single-band character. We also synthesized the polycrystalline Li(1-x)Cu(2)P(2), LiCu(2-x)P(2), and Li(1+x)Cu(2-x)P(2) with different stoichiometries, and observed no superconductivity in all the samples.

    Description: To obtain predictive genes with lower redundancy and better interpretability, a hybrid gene selection method encoding prior information is proposed in this paper. To begin with, the prior information referred to as gene-to-class sensitivity (GCS) of all genes from microarray data is exploited by a single hidden layered feedforward neural network (SLFN). Then, to select more representative and lower redundant genes, all genes are grouped into some clusters by K-means method, and some low sensitive genes are filtered out according to their GCS values. Finally, a modified binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) encoding the GCS information is proposed to perform further gene selection from the remainder genes. For considering the GCS information, the proposed method selects those genes highly correlated to sample classes. Thus, the low redundant gene subsets obtained by the proposed method also contribute to improve classification accuracy on microarray data. The experiments results on some open microarray data verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

    Description: Carbon-coated cobalt sulfide (CoS) hollow nanoparticles on carbon nanotube (CNT) networks are synthesized by combining three simple approaches: direct growth of Co O nanocrystals on the CNT backbones, chemical conversion of the Co O nanocrystals to CoS hollow nanoparticles, and the spatial introduction of conformal surface modification by carbon. It is noteworthy that the CoS hollow nanoparticles with inner cavity of 〈50 nm and an average wall thickness of 6–8 nm are derived from a template-free method. Such a template-free-derived multifunctional nanostructure design achieves the amalgamation of the favorite traits of one-dimensional conducting networks, hollow nanoparticles, and surface modification, thus resulting in much enhanced charge transfer, ion transport, and upholding the integrity of the electrode and electrode/electrolyte interface. When applied the synthesized CoS-based material as anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), excellent performance is observed. For instance, a reversible specific capacity of 562 mAh g at 100 mA g and a capacity retention rate of 90% after 200 cycles at a higher current density of 500 mA g are obtained. Moreover, a superior rate capability is observed with reversible specific capacities of 341 and 276 mAh g at 2000 and at 5000 mA g , respectively.
