Description: We present a design of "ideal" optical delay lines (i.e., constant amplitude and constant group delay over the desired bandwidth). They are based on reflection from coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs). The inter-resonator coupling coefficients are tailored and decrease monotonically with the distance from the input to realize all-pass Bessel filters. The tailored coupling coefficients result in a frequency-dependent propagating distance which compensates for the group velocity dispersion of CROWs. We present a simple formalism for deriving the time-domain coupling coefficients and convert these coefficients to field coupling coefficients of ring resonators. The reflecting CROWs possess a delay-bandwidth product of 0.5 per resonator, larger than that of any kind of transmitting CROW. In the presence of uniform gain, the gain enhanced by slow light propagation and the constant group delay result in efficient and dispersion-free amplifiers.

Description: Customers enjoy engaging in pleasant dining experiences. Schmitt (1999) proposed in his theory of experiential marketing that these experiences were linked with experiential providers (EXPRO), which include communication, verbal identity and signage, product presence, cobranding, spatial environment, electronic media, and people. We designed this study on the basis of Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore whether experiential providers influence customers' intentions and decisions (see Figure 1). The 32-item survey, rated on a 5-point Likert scale anchored by 1 = totally disagree and 5 = totally agree, was conducted after a pilot test was implemented. A total of 317 valid questionnaires were collected within a 2-month period in the spring of 2010 in Northern Taiwan. SPSS version 15.0 was used for statistical analysis of descriptive statistics, survey items, and the model itself by using factor analysis, multiple regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and t test. The respondents consisted of 51.7% females and 48.3% males. The hypothesis that the experiential providers will significantly moderate or increase customers' intentions so that they lead to patronage decisions was supported in this survey, R2 = 0.167, with experiential providers as a moderator, DeltaR2 = 0.043, p 〈 .001. The results showed that female customers perceived the three most important experiential providers to be people (M = 4.27), spatial environment (M = 4.16), and product presence (M = 4.11) whereas male customers valued people (M = 4.05), product presence (M = 3.79), and spatial environment (M = 3.71) as the most important. In addition, female customers were significantly more receptive to all seven experiential providers compared to male customers. The results suggest that restaurant operators should provide quality services that appeal to customers' intentions when they are searching for pleasant dining experiences (i.e., people), in addition to delicious food (i.e., product presence), and unique, comfortable setting designs (i.e., spatial environment). Excellent services, including special designs for women's dining and customized food, could attract and increase female customers' patronage intentions and decisions because they are more receptive to experiential providers. In contrast, male customers have less interest in communication, cobranding, electronic media, verbal identity, and signage, so different promotions will need to be designed to attract their business. There is both theoretical and practical value in this study because it enriches hospitality literature and supports the practical aspects of hospitality service provision. This research should be expanded in the future to widen and increase its value. Adapted from the source document.

Description: Using diagrams of data structure, or conceptual models, is important in businesses. Survey research often has if-then data structure, but discussion of diagramming survey data structure is rare. This study uses the U.S. Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation (FHWAR) survey data and a Taiwan survey in the analysis of benefits of using data structure diagrams in survey research. Examples of data structure diagram use show how diagramming can support consistent and logical data collection, as well as improved data storage and analysis. Analysis also shows how storing if-then (conditional) data in entities/tables allows simple and intuitively meaningful unconditional variable names and can facilitate consideration of conditions that should/can affect analysis. A general conclusion is that the time has come for tourism and business survey researchers to benefit from using diagrams of data structure in planning data accumulation and to benefit from using modern systems in data collection, storage and analysis.

Description: We investigate the extent to which perceptions of the authenticity of supervisor’s personal integrity and character (ASPIRE) moderate the relationship between people’s love of money (LOM) and propensity to engage in unethical behavior (PUB) among 266 part-time employees who were also business students in a five-wave panel study. We found that a high level of ASPIRE perceptions was related to high love-of-money orientation, high self-esteem, but low unethical behavior intention (PUB). Unethical behavior intention (PUB) was significantly correlated with their high Machiavellianism, low self-esteem, and low intrinsic religiosity. Our counterintuitive results revealed that the main effect of LOM on PUB was not significant, but the main effect of ASPIRE on PUB was significant. Further, the significant interaction effect between LOM and ASPIRE on unethical behavior intention provided profoundly interesting findings: High LOM was related to high unethical behavior intention for people with low ASPIRE, but was related to low unethical intention for those with high ASPIRE. People with high LOM and low ASPIRE had the highest unethical behavior intention; whereas those with high LOM and high ASPIRE had the lowest. We discuss results in light of individual differences, ethical environment, and perceived demand characteristics.

Description: IL-25 (IL-17E) is a T-helper cell type 2 (Th2) cytokine best described as a potentiator of Th2 memory responses. Reports of expression of its receptor, IL-25R, on airways structural cells suggest a wider role for IL-25 in remodeling. We hypothesized that IL-25 stimulates local angiogenesis in the asthmatic bronchial mucosa. Immunoreactive IL-25⁺, IL-25R⁺, and CD31⁺ (endothelial) cells in sections of bronchial biopsies from asthmatics and controls were detected by immunohistochemistry. The effect of IL-25 on angiogenesis was examined using an in vitro assay. Real-time PCR was used to detect expression of IL-25R and VEGF mRNA in cultured human vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC), and a cell proliferation kit (WST-8) was used to measure the effect of IL-25 on HUVEC proliferation. Immunostaining showed that IL-25⁺, IL-25R⁺, and CD31⁺/IL-25R⁺ cells were significantly elevated in the bronchial mucosa of asthmatics compared with controls (P 〈 0.003). In asthmatics, the numbers of IL-25⁺ cells correlated inversely with the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (r = -0.639; P = 0.01). In vitro, HUVEC constitutively expressed IL-25R, which was up-regulated further by TNF-α. IL-25 and TNF-α also increased expression of VEGF and VEGF receptors. IL-25 increased HUVEC proliferation and the number, length, and area of microvessel structures in a concentration-dependent manner in vitro. VEGF blockade, the PI3K-specific inhibitor LY294002, and the MAPK/ERK1/2 (MEK1/2)-specific inhibitor U0126 all markedly attenuated IL-25-induced angiogenesis, and the inhibitors also reduced IL-25-induced proliferation and VEGF expression. Our findings suggest that IL-25 is elevated in asthma and contributes to angiogenesis, at least partly by increasing endothelial cell VEGF/VEGF receptor expression through PI3K/Akt and Erk/MAPK pathways. ; Includes references ; p. 1579-1584.

Description: Compared with regulation-weight baseballs, lightweight baseballs generate lower torque on the shoulder and elbow joints without altering the pitching movement and timing. This study investigates the throwing accuracy, throwing velocity, arm swing velocity, and maximum shoulder external rotation (MSER) of adolescent players after 10 weeks of pitching training with appropriate lightweight baseballs. We assigned 24 adolescent players to a lightweight baseball group (group L) and a regulation-weight baseball group (group R) based on their pretraining throwing velocity. Both groups received pitching training 3 times per week for 10 weeks with 4.4- and 5-oz baseballs. The players' throwing accuracy, throwing velocity, arm swing velocity, and MSER were measured from 10 maximum efforts throws using a regulation-weight baseball before and after undergoing the pitching training. The results showed that the players in group L significantly increased their throwing velocity and arm swing velocity (p 〈 0.05) after 10 weeks of pitching training with the 4.4-oz baseball, whereas group R did not (p 〉 0.05). Furthermore, the percentage change in the throwing velocity and arm swing velocity of group L was significantly superior to that of group R (p 〈 0.05). Thus, we concluded that the 10 weeks of pitching training with an appropriate lightweight baseball substantially enhanced the arm swing velocity and throwing velocity of the adolescent baseball players. These findings suggest that using a lightweight baseball, which can reduce the risk of injury without altering pitching patterns, has positive training effects on players in the rapid physical growth and technique development stage. Description: In this study, an enzymatic glucose biosensor based on a three-dimensional gold nanodendrite (GND) modified screen-printed electrode was developed. The GNDs were electrochemically synthesized on the working electrode component of a commercially available screen-printed electrode using a solution acquired by dissolving bulk gold in aqua regia as the precursor. The 3D GND electrode greatly enhanced the effective sensing area of the biosensor, which improved the sensitivity of glucose detection. Actual glucose detections demonstrated that the fabricated devices could perform at a sensitivity of 46.76 μA mM −1  cm −2 with a linear detection range from 28 μM–8.4 mM and detection limit of 7 μM. A fast response time (∼3 s) was also observed. Moreover, only a 20 μl glucose oxidase is required for detection owing to the incorporation of the commercially available screen-printed electrode.

Description: To the Editor: In 2012, the World Health Organization launched plans for a second campaign to eradicate the neglected tropical disease, yaws (1). The first campaign, conducted during the mid-20th century, was tremendously successful in terms of treatment and reduced the number of cases by 95%. However, it failed to eradicate the disease, and when local efforts to prevent new cases proved insufficient, yaws resurged in some areas. Comments on the new yaws eradication campaign have emphasized the need for sustained support and resources. Here we draw attention to an additional concern that could impede yaws eradication efforts.

Description: The purpose of this study is to analyze the interrelationships among the Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean TFT-LCD panel industry stock market indexes by applying a trivariate FIEC-FIGARCH model. The empirical results confirm that the FIEC-FIGARCH model can be used to capture long memory behavior and allow us to conclude that mean and volatility spillover, and long memory effects are found in these three markets. Furthermore, we found that deviations in the long-run equilibrium for Japanese TFT-LCD panel industry adjust back very slowly in comparison to the other two countries; and that, in terms of conditional covariance, dynamic interrelationships exist among the TFT-LCD panel industry stock market indices of these three countries. ► FIEC-FIGARCH analyzes the interactions for three TFT-LCD panel stock indexes. ► The empirical model can be used to capture long memory effects. ► Japanese panel stock index adjusts back very slowly to the long-run equilibrium. ► The three indexes have their own-market and cross-market spillover effects. ► The results assist investors and government agency to make decisions.
