Ein Molekül lässt sich als eine Maschine begreifen, die mit anderen Molekülen in Wechselwirkung tritt. Ein mögliches Ergebnis solcher Wechselwirkung ist der Umbau der Moleküle, d.h. eine chemische Reaktion. Verstünde man die Maschine, so ließen sich die Reaktionen vorhersagen, man wüsste also, wie sich aus einem Stoff ein anderer, neuer Stoff selektiv machen lässt. Ein Modell für die Molekülmaschine besteht in seiner Beschreibung als mechanische Maschine mit den Atomen als Gelenken und den Bindungen zwischen ihnen als Federn. Wenn der Bau der Maschine - die Struktur des Moleküls - bekannt ist, erfordert diese Beschreibung die Kenntnis der Federkräfte. Es wird gezeigt, wie Algorithmen aus dem Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz dazu verhelfen, die Federkräfte aus empirischem Material zu extrahieren
