Description: The attempt to produce a nearly continuous radiation of energy and high tone frequencies by the use of polyphase transmitters is historically considered. The work of Eisenstein and Seibt is described. Experiments with two and three phase transmitters were made; and it was found that the wave trains produced by successive discharges in adjacent phases overlapped in the antenna, thereby causing unmusical tones in the receiver and a diminution of transmitter efficiency. This decrease in efficiency is due to the increased reaction of the antenna on the closed oscillating circuits and the consequent disturbance of the regularly spaced spark discharges of the transmitters of each phase. By increasing the antenna damping, thereby lessening the overlapping of successive wave trains, the musical quality of the tone was improved and the transmitter efficiency markedly increased. Tests on dummy antennae and actual long distance tests were made. The production of practically sustained radiation, susceptible of reception by the use of the ticker or analogous devices, and produced by polyphase transmitters, is favorably considered. The limitation of quenched spark transmitter efficiency by the overlapping of rapidly successive wave trains is discussed.

Description: Highly aggressive cancer types such as pancreatic cancer possess a mortality rate of up to 80% within the first 6 months after diagnosis. To reduce this high mortality rate, more sensitive diagnostic tools allowing an early stage medical imaging of even very small tumours are needed. For this purpose, magnetic, biodegradable nanoparticles prepared using recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA) and incorporated iron oxide (maghemite, -Fe O ) nanoparticles were developed. Galectin-1 has been chosen as target receptor as this protein is upregulated in pancreatic cancer and its precursor lesions but not in healthy pancreatic tissue nor in pancreatitis. Tissue plasminogen activator derived peptides (t-PA-ligands), that have a high affinity to galectin-1 have been chosen as target moieties and were covalently attached onto the nanoparticle surface. Improved targeting and imaging properties were shown in mice using single photon emission computed tomography–computer tomography (SPECT–CT), a handheld gamma camera, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Description: Many ethics review bureaucracies present signed, written forms administered at a single point in time as the default, best-practice method for obtaining and documenting consent to participate in research. The demand is emblematic of ethics review committees' insistence on form over function, their failure to understand the cultural contexts of field research, and erroneous assumptions about research methods. Ethnographers responding to an international survey argued that written consent may not protect participants, may mask unethical research, and may often be inappropriate for legal, cultural, political or historical reasons. We suggest the dominance of written consent reflects culturally specific views of paper, writing, signatures, and contracts grounded in particular historical imaginations of the authenticity of the signature and the power of writing and forms. Construed by ethics review institutions as culturally universal, the signed consent form has come to take on the qualities of a fetish. Description: This paper presents a data sample algorithm applied to wireless sensor network applications with disruptive connections. Additionally, it defines a model for delay-tolerant sensor network where drop strategies are applied to improve the phenomenon coverage in an application that monitors the forest temperature incidence for wildlife observation. The environmental application model comprises: i) Phenomenon generation based on a Gaussian random field along with the Matern covariance model; ii) Sensing nodes deployment based on simple sequential inhibition process with a mobile sink node following a random walk process; iii) Data collection and processing based on a data-aware drop strategy; and iv) Phenomenon reconstruction based on simple kriging interpolation. This research employed the data-aware drop strategy and compared it with the others, reported in the literature. Besides the satisfactory application of this model, the results show that the performance of data-aware drop strategy is twice better than conventional ones in all evaluated scenarios.

Description: We develop a theoretical framework for calculation of high-Q{sup 2} exclusive electrodisintegration of A=3 systems. The main result of this work is the calculation of the final state interaction of the struck energetic nucleon with recoil nucleons within the generalized eikonal approximation (GEA), which allows us to account for the finite and relatively large momenta of the bound nucleons in the nucleus. This approach makes it possible to study in a self-consistent way the short-range correlations in nuclei. This is because the GEA does not require a stationary condition for recoil nucleons as does the conventional Glauber approximation. As a result GEA treats explicitly the Fermi motion of recoil nucleons in the nucleus.

Description: Based on the theoretical framework of a generalized eikonal approximation, we study the two-nucleon emission reactions in high Q{sup 2} electrodisintegration of {sup 3}He. Our main aim is to investigate those features of the reaction which can be unambiguously identified with the short-range properties of the ground state nuclear wave function. To evaluate the differential cross section, we work in the formalism of the decay function which characterizes the property of the ground state wave function as well as the decay properties of the final two-nucleon spectator system. Our main motivation here is to explore the accessibility of two- and three-nucleon short-range correlations in {sup 3}He as well as to isolate unambiguously single and double rescattering processes in the reaction dynamics. Our analysis also allowed us to identify new approaches for investigating the role of the practically unknown three-nucleon forces in the ground state wave function of {sup 3}He.
