Purpose: Despite the fact that MR-imaging is one of the most sensitive methods for detecting and characterizing liver malignancies, unenhanced sequences remain limited, especially for very small and poorly visible lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contrast enhancing effect after administration of Gd-EOB-DTPA between liver parenchyma and tumor as well as parenchyma and applicator during stage of catheter placement (SCP) of interstitial laser treatment (ILT) of liver malignancies. Furthermore, potential interaction between Gd-EOB-DTPA and Thermometry (ST) were evaluated. Materials and Methods: In 30 MR-guided treatment sessions (Monocath®, Augsburg; 1.5 T Magnetom Symphony, Siemens) patients received 0.025 mmol gadoxetic acid/ kg/ body weight (Gd-EOB-DTPA; Bayer Schering Pharma AG, Berlin) by means of bolus injection. Comparison to a control group without contrast agent was made using breath-hold T1-weighted three-dimensional (3D) - gradient-echo (GRE)- fast low-angle shot (Flash) sequences, which allowed almost isotropic resolution and multiplanar reconstruction (MPR). Real-time monitoring during Thermometry (ST) was performed with GRE-T1-Flash-2D-sequences. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), CR (Contrast) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated to determine signal and contrast modification between essential ILT-affecting structures and were plotted over time for SCP and ST. Statistical analysis was realized with paired Wilcoxon-Test. Results: SI, SNR ...
