Content: The idea of the Inner is central to our concept of a person and so lies at the heart of all our interaction. But how should this concept be understood? What do we mean when we wonder what is going on inside our heads? Clearly the inner world is not literally inside us, but if not, where is it? Although the idea of the Inner is central to our comprehension of ourselves, what does it actually mean? Using Wittgenstein's recently published writings on the philosophy of psychology, together with unpublished material, Paul Johnston present a thorough account of a subject central to Wittgenstein's later work. He shows that Wittgenstein's arguments involve a radical rethinking of our understanding of the Inner and present a challenge to contemporary views which has yet to be fully appreciated or understood. Written in a non-technical and readable style, this book shows how a Wittgensteinian approach can dissolve age-old problems about the nature of consciousness and the relation between the mind, the body and the soul. The resultant picture of the Inner, with its stress on the special role of language, throws new light on the direction of Wittgenstein's work and presents a stimulating and controversial alternative to more fashionable positions on the subject.

Content: Paul Johnston tells the stories of four groups of workers, two in local government and two in the private sector. He examines complex patterns of difference related to gender, race, occupation, and public or private employment. Each group of workers engaged in some form of what Johnston calls "social movement unionism," including an early "Justice for Janitors" campaign. These movements reflect the efforts of individual organizers, such as Maxine Jenkins, key organizer for the first comparable worth strikes in both public and private sectors. They are also shaped, Johnston argues, by their different historical and structural contexts. Success depends in each case, he concludes, on the fit between these conditions and the model of unionism employed
Content: Johnston examines in detail the interaction of public and private labor movements, gender relations, and urban life and politics. His book will interest not only industrial relations scholars but also political scientists, social movement scholars, organization theorists, students of public administration, urban sociologists, and those who study comparable worth

Content: This is the first book to examine comprehensively the chlorine industry and its effects on the environment. It covers not only the history of chlorine production, but also looks at its products, their effects on the global environment, and the international legislation which controls their use, release, and disposal. Individual chapters are dedicated to subjects such as releases of organochlorines into the environment, and the environmental impact of ozone depletion, providing simple explanations of these complex issues. These are backed up with case studies of landmark events in the history of the chlorine industry - for example the Seveso explosion or the Yusho and Yu-Cheng mass poisonings. With a clear, concise text and numerous compilations of critical data, this book will prove an invaluable source reference for environmental scientists, students, and policy makers with an interest in this subject
