Description: Scientific discoveries and new technologies that aim to improve human health challenge our understanding of what it means to be human. Perceptions of being and the boundaries between humans and other species may be disrupted by our potential to manipulate genes and their expression, regulate cellular functions, and replace tissues to improve the quality of life. As we gain a greater understanding of genetic complexity, molecular mechanisms, and cellular and tissue functions, technologies aimed at modifications could, in theory, also be applied to enhance our physical and cognitive abilities. How can the normative and historical discourse about human identity help us decide if, how, and when to use genetic, stem cell, and reproductive technologies that may change characteristics of our cells and thus, perhaps, our individual and human identities ( 1 )?

Description: Rather than rely on the scientists to police themselves or wait for the US National Institutes of Health to dispatch safety guidelines, the mayor of Cambridge, Alfred Vellucci, convened public hearings on the topic. In the 1970s, biologists were not relied on to regulate matters of much broader concern on their own, despite their much-heralded initial efforts to self-govern. [...]the involvement of many other players did not quash scientific research and communication, but helped molecular biology and biotechnology to thrive. *

Description: The article discusses the decision of International Medical Tribunal in Nuremberg delivered 70 years ago against doctors and bureaucrats accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity for their roles in cruel and often lethal concentration camp medical experiments. The court came up with a 10-point Nuremberg Code, which is followed till date. The need for physicians even 70 years later to pay heed to the code and follow it is highlighted.
