Description: This article analyzes changing concepts and practices of knowledge production and governance in the Ottoman Province of Yemen from the re-conquest of the Yemeni highlands in 1871-3 to the beginning of the First World War. It argues that, while Ottoman bureaucrats embraced modern governmentality...

Description: Physical penetration and infectivity penetration of adenovirus and influenza virus aerosols through respirators were measured to better characterize the effectiveness of filtering facepiece respirators against airborne virus. A physical penetration of 2%-5% was found. However, large sample-to-sample variation made it difficult to quantify the difference in physical penetration caused by the different virus aerosols. Infectivity penetration of adenovirus was much lower than physical penetration, indicating that the latter provides a conservative estimate for respirator performance.

Description: Reproductive efficiency is of economic importance in commercial beef cattle production, as failure to achieve pregnancy reduces the number of calves marketed per cow exposed. Identification of genetic markers with predictive merit for reproductive success would facilitate early selection of sires with daughters having improved reproductive rate without increasing generation intervals. To identify regions of the genome harboring variation affecting reproductive success, we applied a genomewide association study (GWAS) approach based on the 〉700,000 SNP marker assay, using a procedure based on genotyping multianimal pools of DNA to increase the number of animals that could be genotyped with available resources. Cows from several populations were classified according to reproductive efficiency, and DNA was pooled within population and phenotype prior to genotyping. Populations evaluated included a research population at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, 2 large commercial ranch populations, and a number of smaller populations (〈100 head) across the United States. We detected 2 SNP with significant genomewide association (P ≤ 1.49 × 10(-7)), on BTA21 and BTA29, 3 SNP with suggestive associations (P ≤ 2.91 × 10(-6)) on BTA5, and 1 SNP with suggestive association each on BTA1 and BTA25. In addition to our novel findings, we confirmed previously published associations for SNP on BTA-X and all autosomes except 3 (BTA21, BTA22, and BTA28) encompassing substantial breed diversity including Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds. The study identified regions of the genome associated with reproductive efficiency, which are being targeted for further analysis to develop robust marker systems, and demonstrated that DNA pooling can be used to substantially reduce the cost of GWAS in cattle.

Description: Metric entropy quantities, like covering numbers or entropy numbers, and positive definite kernels play an important role in mathematical learning theory. Using smoothness properties of the Fourier transform of the kernels, Zhou [D.-X. Zhou, The covering number in learning theory, J. Complexity 18 (3) (2002) 739–767] proved an upper estimate for the covering numbers of the unit ball of Gaussian reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs), considered as a subset of the space of continuous functions. In this note we determine the of these covering numbers, exploiting an explicit description of Gaussian RKHSs via orthonormal bases. We show that Zhou’s estimate is almost sharp (up to a double logarithmic factor), but his conjecture on the correct asymptotic rate is far too optimistic. Moreover we give an application of our entropy results to small deviations of certain smooth Gaussian processes.

Description: The article discusses the question why and how social psychologists should research the impact of having been the host of the World Cup for the Brazilian society. It will be argued that social psychologist should focus on changing national narratives, social representations and social imaginaries of being Brazilian. This approach should be related to research on collective action and collective emotions. Based on some qualitative projects conducted by the author in Germany and Brazil, the ambivalent character of modern national identity will be discussed. This ambivalence is grounded on different national narratives that are essential for the self-understanding of members from a nation. Hosting the World Cup has impacted on these fundamental narratives, already in anticipation of the event. Whereas expectations regarding the upcoming event were broadly skeptical and linked to fears, the experience of the event by itself included some positively attributed surprises. For some, the fearful view of “imagina na copa” turned into a proud “copa das copas” – though critics in regard to large spendings maintained. It can be assumed that having been the host of the World Cup, in the future will be embedded in national narratives and therefore will have impacts for Brazilian national identity. Keywords: national identity; national narratives; collective pride; collective action; ambivalence.
