Content: "In Sounds Beyond, Kevin C. Karnes illuminates the unofficial and interconnected music and art scenes in the USSR during the second half of the 1970s through the work of Arvo Pärt, one of the most successful and widely known contemporary classical composers with a large international following. Karnes shows how Pärt's work of the 1970s took shape in dialogue with a community of alternative musicians and as part of a vital yet forgotten culture of collective experimentation Karnes calls the 1970s Soviet Underground. Using a combination of archival research and oral history, Karnes carefully situates modes of experimentation in the late socialist contexts out of which they emerged, and he also shows the degree to which experimental scenes in the East and West were in dialogue and shared several common goals. Karnes also unveils the deeply communal nature of experimental projects in music and the visual arts, from John Cage to Morton Feldman, and in dislodging the mythology of the solitary genius cultivated in the official biographies of Pärt and many others; as he writes, his work was impossible without community"--

Content: One of today's most widely acclaimed composers, Arvo Pärt broke into the soundscape of the Cold War West with Tabula Rasa in 1977, a work that introduced his signature tintinnabuli style to listeners throughout the world. In the first book dedicated to this pathbreaking composition, author Kevin C. Karnes tells the story of Tabula Rasa as one of Pärt and of Europe itself, traced over the course of a quarter-century that saw momentous transitions in European culture and politics, history and memory. Beginning at the site of the work's creation in the Estonian SSR, and drawing extensively upon a range of previously unexamined archival materials, Karnes recounts Pärt's discovery of tintinnabuli amidst his experiments with the music of the Western and Soviet avant-gardes. He examines Tabula Rasa in relation to modernist conceptions of musical structure, the ascetic practice of Orthodox Christianity, postwar experiences of electronic music, and the polystylistic approaches to composition that have become emblematic of the Soviet 1970s. Tracing the export of Tabula Rasa to the West and Pärt's emigration in 1980, the book reveals intersections of critical commentary with visions of the "end of history" that attended the collapse of European communism to suggest that it was in this confluence of listening, discovery, and geopolitical reordering that enduring lines of conversation about Pärt and his music took shape. - Kevin C. Karnes is Professor of Music at Emory University. He is the author of A Kingdom Not of This World: Wagner, the Arts, and Utopian Visions in Fin-de-Siècle Vienna (Oxford University Press, 2013) and Music, Criticism, and the Challenge of History (Oxford University Press, 2008)

Content: A brand-new look at the life and music of renowned composer Erich Wolfgang KorngoldErich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957) was the last compositional prodigy to emerge from the Austro-German tradition of Mozart and Mendelssohn. Lauded in his youth by everyone from Mahler to Puccini, Korngold’s auspicious career in the early 1900s spanned chamber music, opera, and musical theater. Today, he is best known for his Hollywood film scores, composed between 1935 and 1947. From his prewar operas in Vienna to his pathbreaking contributions to American film scoring, Korngold and His World provides a substantial reassessment of Korngold’s life and accomplishments.Korngold struggled to reconcile the musical language of his Viennese upbringing with American popular song and cinema, and was forced to adapt to a new life after wartime emigration to Hollywood. This collection examines Korngold’s operas and film scores, the critical reception of his music, and his place in the milieus of both the Old and New Worlds. The volume also features numerous historical documents—many previously unpublished and in first-ever English translations—including essays by the composer as well as memoirs by his wife, Luzi Korngold, and his father, the renowned music critic Julius Korngold. The contributors are Leon Botstein, David Brodbeck, Bryan Gilliam, Daniel Goldmark, Lily Hirsch, Kevin Karnes, Sherry Lee, Neil Lerner, Sadie Menicanin, Ben Winters, Amy Wlodarski, and Charles Youmans.Bard Music Festival 2019Korngold and His WorldBard CollegeAugust 9–11 and 16–18, 2019
