A privately produced and only personally used book on acupuncture by a folk physician named Ma Wanzhi 馬萬智, 字 Ziming 子明, of Shanxi 山西 province. The two handwritten volumes are designed to copy the appearance of printed books. The cover has a label with the title; the text is preceded by a preface. However, the 中國中醫古籍總目 does not list this book. Also an author-physician named Ma Wanzhi does not appear in any other bibliographical work. Apparently, the author’s level of education was not very high. His book was written as a digest of the Zhen jiu da cheng 鍼灸大成 by Yang Jizhou 楊繼洲. The author excerpted passages to explain the locations of needle insertion holes, and the depth of an appropriate insertion, as well as the number of moxibustion cones to be burned at a location. He also provided brief statements on therapeutic effects to be achieved by treating at each insertion/cauterization point. They are followed by two sections “Pediatrics”, 小兒科, and “Males, females, old, young,” 男女老幼, listing numerous illnesses to be treated with acupuncture, push-and-pull massage (tui na 推拿) and pharmaceutical recipes. The volume concludes with long lists of pharmaceutical recipes.
