Content: The application of statistical techniques to the study of manuscript books, based on the analysis of large data sets acquired through the archaeological observation of manuscripts, is one of the most original trends in codicological research, aiming not only to reconstruct on a sound basis the methods and processes used in book manufacture and their tendential evolution in space and time, but also to interpret them as the result of a dynamic interplay between various and often incompatible needs (of cultural, technical, social and economic nature) that book artisans had to reconcile in the best possible way. The present collection of essays in English translation was guided by the desire to offer a multifarious well-articulated picture of the application of statistical methodology to the various aspects of manuscript production, namely analysis of materials, characterization of book types, manufacturing techniques, planning and use of layout characterization of scripts and scribal habits. The volume aims to present to a wider readership a series of significant papers which have appeared over the last fifteen years, by means of which the statistical approach continues to demonstrate its vast potential.

Content: The universal practice of selecting and excerpting, summarizing and canonizing, arranging and organizing texts and visual signs, either in carefully dedicated types of manuscripts or not, is common to all manuscript cultures. Content: Ce volume, issu d’un colloque organisé à Aix-en-Provence par Élodie Attia en 2018, offre des regards croisés sur la production de bibles latine, grecque et hébreu, typologiquement semblables, au cours du Moyen-Âge. Il explore d’abord différentes façons dont les bibles complètes en un ou plusieurs volumes, issues de la même production (pandectes), ont été produites suivant les lieux et les époques, avec un accent sur leur complexité structurelle. Les bibles complètes sont rares dans toutes les traditions considérées, mais d'un grand intérêt, aussi en raison des défis techniques que leur production posait aux artisans. Les Bibles partielles représentent une façon différente de transmettre le texte biblique, qu’il s’agisse de parties de la Bible, assemblées et réassemblées de façon plus ou moins originales, ou de la conception de nouveau types (comme les « Pentateuque-Megillot-Haftarot », produits dans le monde ashkénaze avant 1300). Les Bibles à commentaires sont une catégorie très variée, illustrée ici par deux exemples: d’abord les pandectes produites par Théodulfe († 821), dans lesquelles les notes marginales s’apparentent à un apparat critique ; ensuite des manuscrits hébreux contenant des commentaires exégétiques systématiques, dans des mises en page sophistiquées qui varient aussi suivant leurs domaines de production. Enfin, la présentation de nouveaux fragments d’un très ancien rouleau de la Genèse et de l’Exode de la Guéniza du Caire permet de souligner son insertion dans la tradition massorétique, et de faire une place aux bibles partielles sur rouleaux. Cet ouvrage montre tout l’intérêt d’une approche comparatiste des bibles anciennes et représente, espérons-le, une étape supplémentaire vers une perception plus englobante d’une histoire de la Bible.

Content: This volume is the result of a symposium organised in 2018 by Élodie Attia in Aix-en-Provence and offers a cross-sectional view of the production of typologically similar Latin, Greek and Hebrew Bibles during the course of the Middle Ages. It first explores the different ways in which complete Bibles, in one or more volumes from the same production (pandects), were produced in different places and at different times, with an emphasis on their structural complexity. Complete Bibles are rare in all the traditions considered but especially interesting given the technical challenges that their production posed for craftsmen. Partial Bibles represent a different way of transmitting the biblical text, whether they consist of a choice of parts of the Bible, assembled and reassembled in more or less original ways, or in the design of new types (such as the "Pentateuch-Megillot-Haftarot", produced in the Ashkenazi world before 1300). Bibles with commentaries are a very varied category, illustrated here by two examples: first, the pandects produced by Theodulf († 821), in which the marginal notes are akin to a critical apparatus; second, Hebrew manuscripts containing systematic exegetical commentaries in sophisticated layouts that also vary according to their areas of production. Finally, the presentation of new fragments of a very ancient scroll of Genesis and Exodus from the Cairo Genizah sheds new light on its insertion into the Masoretic tradition, and to document the existence of partial Bibles in the form of scrolls. This volume shows the value of a comparative approach to ancient Bibles and hopefully represents a further step towards a more comprehensive perception of a history of the Bible.
