; The use of pesticides in the Ebro Delta has been associated to Crassostrea gigas mortality. In the present Thesis physico-chemical parameter and pesticide levels in water, together with a battery of biomarkers and metal body burdens in oysters were monitored in oysters transplanted from May to June in 2008 and 2009 with the aim of establishing possible connections between them and the mortality of oysters. Metal accumulation patterns differed two sources: one from agricultural activities, (for As, Cu, Zn )and the another from industrial activities in the upper part of the Ebro River (Hg and Pb) or from hunting activities (Pb). Carboxylesterase activity in gills showed to be a good indicator of exposure to anticholinergic pesticides in oysters. Biomarkers responses evidenced clear differences between years. Oysters transplanted in 2008 increased their antioxidant defences from May to June and presented low oxidative damage and mortality rates. Conversely oysters transplanted in 2009 showed unaffected antioxidant defences from May to June and consequently increased levels of tissue damage and mortality rates. Bentazone and propanil together with high temperatures and salinity levels were related with tissue damage in oysters but the observed large differences between years and the high mortalities in 2009 suggest that in addition to abiotic factors, other factors such as the use of oysters susceptible to diseases could be affecting. ; Postprint (published version)
