    Description: In this communication, we present an elegant and cost effective strategy for the rational design of novel materials used in the conversion of solar energy into chemical bonds. The strategy relies on the combination of theory and the latest developments in high-resolution XAS/XES at synchrotrons, which are able to map the material electronic structure with high precision, requiring a very limited amount of sample (experimental work) or none (theory).

    Description: The electronic structure of nano-NiO was determined using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy. The nanosized NiO particles were reduced in situ , leading to the formation of metallic Ni in a single step. Time-resolved RIXS elucidated in real time the changes on the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure of the material, which are dramatically affected by the reduction process.

    Description: We report on the reactivity of grafted tantalum organometallic catalysts with molecular oxygen. The changes in the local Ta electronic structure were followed by in situ high-energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy (HEROS). The results revealed agglomeration and formation of Ta dimers, which cannot be reversed. The process occurs independently of starting grafted complex.

    Description: The molecular water oxidation catalyst [Ru(bda)(L) 2 ] has been incorporated into pyridine-decorated MIL-101(Cr) metalorganic frameworks. The resulting MIL-101@Ru materials exhibit turnover frequencies (TOFs) up to ten times higher compared to the homogenous reference. An unusual dependence of the formal TOFs on oxidant concentration is observed that ultimately arises from differing amounts of catalysts in the MOF crystals being active.

    Description: Introduction Cat-scratch disease (CSD)-neuroretinitis (CSDN) is an unusual pathology in immunocompetent individuals (1–2% of CSD). It typically presents with sudden vision loss following a febrile illness. Case report A 10 year-old healthy girl presented with fever, headache, vomits and abdominal pain for 48 h. Also, she referred myodesopsias on her right eye. She had daily contact with kittens. Physical examination showed bilateral cervical nodes. At presentation, her ophthalmologic examination revealed a right eye disc swelling with normal visual acuity. One-week later, unilateral sudden diminished visual acuity (RE=2/10) with macular serous detachment was detected. Blood analysis revealed normal white cell count, increased C-reactive protein (138 mg/L) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (44 mm/h). A lumbar puncture showed pleocytosis (56/uL). Cranial and orbit MRI were normal. Blood and LCR cultures were negative. HIV, herpesviruses, Toxoplasma gondii, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Borrelia burgdorferi, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, syphilis and autoimmune diseases were excluded. Serologic test (IFA) for Bartonella spp, in blood and CSF, was positive (antibodies titers: IgM 32; IgG 4096) with negative DNA amplification. She was treated with doxycycline and rifampicin. Moreover, intravenous corticosteroids were added in the first 3 days. She became asymptomatic and right visual acuity was 10/10 after 3 months. Discussion The absence of a macular star does not exclude and should not delay the diagnosis of CSDN. Serology remains the most common test to support the diagnosis. The role of antibiotics with or without steroids is not consensual. Still, patients usually have a favourable visual outcome.

    Description: We report on the decomposition of platinum acetylacetonate (Pt(acac) 2 ) in hydrogen induced by flash heating. The changes in the local Pt structure were followed by high energy resolution off-resonant spectroscopy uniquely performed with sub-second time resolution. The decomposition consists of a two-step reduction process of the Pt( ii ) species.

    Description: An autoclave reactor was modified to perform simultaneously high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD XAS) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy measurements without altering the reactor design. This operando cell allows one to follow changes in the electronic and geometric structure of the catalyst with HERFD XAS and relate them to the simultaneously detected activity and reaction species with ATR-FTIR formed during the reaction in the liquid phase. The capability of the cell is demonstrated by two studies. The first shows the reduction of Au/CeO 2 precursors in different solvents. The second shows that mainly Au 0 is present in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene over Au/CeO 2 .

    Description: Understanding electron mobility on TiO 2 is crucial because of its applications in photocatalysis and solar cells. This work shows that shallow traps believed to be involved in electron migration in TiO 2 conduction band are formed upon band gap excitation, i.e. , are not pre-existing states. The shallow traps in TiO 2 results from large polarons and are not restricted to surface.

    Description: We report the dynamics of electrons injected into TiO 2 due to the excitation of Ru-N719 dye at 532 nm. The synchrotron based broadband transient mid-IR spectroscopy revealed that the injected electrons are quickly confined to a trap state with an average energy of ca. 240 meV below the conduction band. The average energy of the trapping states did not change with the increase of the delay time, suggesting a singular electronic identity of the trap states.
