    Description: The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of long-term abiotic processes during aging of organic pollutants in soil on their microbial degradability and formation of non-extractable residues. The specific aims of our study were to investigate how the fate of 353-nonylphenol (NP) and phenanthrene (Phe) in soils might be affected by: (i) saturation of soil by cations with different valency (Na , Ca or Al ), (ii) addition of organic substrate (wood flour) during incubation period and (iii) different soil moisture levels. This study showed positive effect of long-term aging of sterilized samples on respiration of re-inoculated samples. However, the lack of aging effects on the mineralization of NP and Phe indicates that slow sorption processes by diffusion into less bioaccessible domains were not relevant in studied soils. Similarly, the lower respiration and xenobiotic mineralization rates in the Na and Al treated soils indicate that this is due to toxic effects on microbial activity and not due to xenobiotic accessibility. Instead, the formation of non-extractable residues was strongly promoted by biological activity, most likely through formation of more reactive metabolites. The addition of wood flour greatly stimulated microbial respiration and enhanced NP mineralization while inhibiting that of Phe. Along with negligible effect of water addition after 4 weeks of incubation on kinetics of soil respiration, the soil moisture effect on xenobiotics mineralization indicates that most probably the bioavailability of NP and Phe increased due to bridging role of water films in soil.

    Description: The molecular order and thermotropic transitions of tris-cis-tris-trans-dodeca- [organo(dimethylorganosiloxy)]cyclododecasiloxanes {RSi(O)[OSiMe(2)R']}(12) (R = Ph, R' = Me, CH(2)Cl, Vi; R = Me, Et, Vi, R' = Me) have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray scattering. The cyclododecasiloxanes with phenyl side groups (R = Ph) can form mesomorphic structures within a very wide temperature range. Compounds with R = Me and Vi are liquids and exhibit microphase separation above their glass transition temperature because of the different nature and structure of the organic R and trimethylsiloxy OSiMe(3) side groups. When the side group R = Et, a mesomorphic structure is formed in a substantially more narrow temperature region than that for cycles containing phenyl groups. Thus, the type of side group R in organocyclododecasiloxanes determines their ability for self-ordering into mesomorphic structures and the thermal stability of the mesomorphic state.

    Description: We report on the novel protocol for enzyme immobilization into gel of siloxanes using water-organic mixtures with the high content of organic solvent as a reaction medium. Hydrolysis of alkoxysilanes carried out without excessive dilution with water resulted in more active and stable enzyme containing membranes. Immobilization of an inherently labile lactate oxidase according to the proposed sol-gel protocol over Prussian Blue modified electrode resulted in an advanced lactate biosensor characterized with a sensitivity of 0.18 A M(-1) cm(-2) in the flow injection analysis (FIA) mode over a wide dynamic range. A comparison with the known sensors has shown that analytical performances of the elaborated lactate biosensor are advantageous over both published systems and commercialized devices. The biosensor shows an appropriate stability and is suitable for clinical analysis (including noninvasive diagnostics) and food quality control.

    Description: A fluorescent dye comprising four BODIPY derivatives conjugated to a cyclotetrasiloxane core was synthesized by consecutive hydrosilylation and esterification reactions. Photophysical properties of the dye in various organic solvents were investigated. It was shown that due to a fourfold extinction coefficient increase and a moderate quantum yield decrease the brightness of the tetra-BODIPY dye in low-polarity solvents, calculated per molecule, increased 3 times when compared to mono-BODIPY. By contrast, in polar solvents there was a dramatic drop in brightness apparently associated with intramolecular interactions of the low-polar BODIPY chromophores.

    Description: For icosahedral phases of the Al-Cu-Fe system, components of the electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, Hall effect, and heat capacity associated with thermally induced charge carriers for the first time have been considered jointly over a wide temperature range. It has been shown that the full range of thermal effects can be understood in the framework of the unified concept, which is based on an inhomogeneous system of two-level electronic excitations. A model of the inhomogeneous electronic state and the mechanism of its formation with the dominant role of short-range order have been proposed.

    Description: The heat capacity of icosahedral quasicrystals Al 63 Cu 25 Fe 12 and Al 62 Cu 25.5 Fe 12.5 has been studied at high temperatures up to 1700 K, which is by almost 400 K higher than the melting point of the material. It has been shown that the melt exhibits an excess heat capacity with respect to that determined by the Dulong-Petit law and that is a direct extension of the excess heat capacity of the solid state. It has been concluded that the excess heat capacity is related, as a whole, to the short-range order in the quasicrystal structure. This circumstance allows the identification of the orbital hybridization as the most probable mechanism of formation of the pseudogap in the electronic structure of the quasicrystals.

    Description: This article is not a review in the conventional sense. Rather, it is a monographic study of the implications of detection in Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals of the electronic heat capacity contributions associated with the two-level electron excitations. Our aim was to reveal correlations between these contributions, on the one hand, and specific features of electron transport, magnetic susceptibility, Hall-effect, tunnelling and optical spectra, on the other hand. It is shown that the full range of these features can be understood in the framework of the unified conceptual scheme based on two-level electron excitations.

    Description: The precise measurements of the specific heat and the linear expansion coefficient of polygrain samples of the ordered icosahedral phase Al 63 Cu 25 Fe 12 have been performed in the temperature range 1.8–400.0 K. The deviations from the Grüneisen law, according to which the temperature dependences of the lattice specific heat at constant volume and the linear expansion coefficient are identical to each other, have been analyzed. The proofs that the specific heat of the quasicrystals contains latent electronic and lattice contributions of the Schottky type have been obtained. The revealed contributions can be thermodynamic consequences of the fractal energy spectra.

    Description: 1,3,5,7-Tetramethyl-1,3,5,7-tetrahydroxycyclotetrasiloxane has been synthesized in good yield from tetrapotassium tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxanolate. Methods for isolation of all-cis-isomer I and cis-trans-cis-isomer II as the only crystalline product have been developed. Both isomers have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), elemental analysis, NMR ((1)H, (13)C, (29)Si), and IR. The stability of these compounds in solutions and the solid state has been investigated.
