Content: How and why did the Congolese elite turn from loyal intermediaries into opponents of the colonial state? This book seeks to enrich our understanding of the political and cultural processes culminating in the tumultuous decolonization of the Belgian Congo. Focusing on the making of an African bourgeoisie, the book illuminates the so-called évolués' social worlds, cultural self-representations, daily life and political struggles. https://youtu.be/c8ybPCi80dc

    ISBN: 9780511778957 (ebook)
Uniform Title: Heiliger Krieg und Demokratie.
Content: Over the last decade, political Islam has been denounced in the Western media and in the surrounding literature as a terrorist or fascist movement that is entirely at odds with Western democratic ideology. Kai Hafez's book overturns these arguments, contending that, despite its excesses, as a radical form of political opposition the movement plays a central role in the processes of democratization and modernization, and that these processes have direct parallels in the history and politics of the West. By analyzing the evolution of Christian democratization through the upheavals of the Reformation, colonisation, fascism, and totalitarianism, the book shows how radicalism and violence were constant accompaniments to political change, and that these components - despite assertions to the contrary - are still part of Western political culture to this day.

Series Statement: Studien zur Geschichte der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Band 7
Uniform Title: Hierarchien. Das Unbehagen der Geschlechter mit dem Harnack-Prinzip
Content: The Max Planck Society (MPG), one of the most successful research institutions worldwide, serves as a prime example of the German science system, in which hierarchies and relations of dependency play a major role. This body stands center stage in the present book, which analyzes processes of socio-cultural and structural transformation at the MPG during the first fifty years of its existence – from the non-transparent interdependencies typical of informal networks to a modern research institution geared towards gender equality policy. Two women’s working worlds within this research organization are analyzed through a cultural history and history-of-science lens. One of them, science, was long closed to all but a tiny number of women. The other was the office, where most women in this context worked most of the time. What promoted female scientific careers at the MPG, what obstructed them, and what role did the »Harnack Principle,« the MPG’s own structural principle of the personality-centered organization of research, play in these processes? The book also foregrounds the negotiation of gender equality processes beginning in the late 1980s, which helped break down the traditional gender order and trigger a cultural shift at the Max Planck Society.

    Uniform Title: Sozialtheorie.
Content: Social theory is the theoretical core of the social sciences, clearly distinguishable from political theory and cultural analysis. This book offers a unique overview of the development of social theory from the end of the Second World War in 1945 to the present day. Spanning the literature in English, French and German, it provides an excellent background to the most important social theorists and theories in contemporary sociological thought, with crisp summaries of the main books, arguments and controversies. It also deals with newly emerging schools from rational choice to symbolic interactionism, with new ambitious approaches (Habermas, Luhmann, Giddens, Bourdieu), structuralism and antistructuralism, critical revisions of modernization theory, feminism and neopragmatism. Written by two of the world's leading sociologists and based on their extensive academic teaching, this unrivalled work is ideal both for students in the social sciences and humanities and for anyone interested in contemporary theoretical debates.

    Uniform Title: Macht des Heiligen.
Content: 'Disenchantment' is a key term in the self-understanding of modernity. But what exactly does this concept mean? What was its original meaning when Max Weber introduced it? And can the conventional meaning or Max Weber's view really be defended, given the present state of knowledge about the history of religion? This book attempts to divest this concept of its enduring enchantment.
