Content: Deutsch ist Amtssprache in sieben Nationen und wird in vielen weiteren Regionen von Minderheiten gesprochen. Dass es deshalb alles andere als einheitlich strukturiert ist und viele verschiedene vielfältige nationale, regionale und soziale Prägungen besitzt, verwundert nicht. Die Schwerpunkte dieses Sammelbandes zur deutschen Sprache liegen daher auf den Bereichen Variations- und Soziolinguistik. Mehrere Aufsätze thematisieren den plurizentrischen Charakter des Deutschen, andere Beiträge bearbeiten soziolinguistische Themen wie Fachsprachen, Sprache von Generationen, Probleme der Standardabgrenzung sowie sprachliche Variation und Denken.Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf sprachenpolitischen Überlegungen zur Stellung der deutschen Sprache in der Welt. Zum einen wird die Bedeutung der deutschen Sprache in verschiedenen Staaten und im Vergleich zum Englischen dargestellt. Zum anderen geht es um Maßnahmen der Bundesregierung zur Förderung von Deutsch als Minderheitensprache sowie als Sprache der EU-Institutionen. Auch sprachenpolitische Interessen kleinerer deutschsprachiger Staaten werden aufgegriffen.Eng mit der Stellung der deutschen Sprache hängt auch der Bedarf an Unterricht in Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache (DaF/DaZ) zusammen. Auch diesem Aspekt ist eine Reihe von Beiträgen gewidmet, die DaF/DaZ sowohl im deutschsprachigen Raum als auch im anderssprachigen Ausland berücksichtigen. Beiträge zu Sprachkontakt und kulturellen Dimensionen des Deutschen runden den Band ab.

Content: German is an official language in seven nations, and spoken as a minority language in many other regions. This volume explores the diverse national, regional, and societal influences that shape the contemporary German language, and discusses current issues related to variational and social linguistics as well as language policy. Additional chapters examine German as a foreign/second language and the cultural dimensions of language and language contact.
