    Content: Wie schon die meisten hellenistischen Könige zeichneten sich auch die römischen Klientelherrscher in der Zeit des frühen Prinzipat durch Stitungen und Spenden an Städte, Gemeinden und Heiligtümer außerhalb ihrer eigenen Herrschatsgebiete aus. Jedoch zeigt eine genauere Analyse der Stitungsempfänger, der Verteilung und Art ihrer Gaben, dass es bei der euergetischen Praxis der Klientelherrscher nicht um eine einfach Imitation oder Fortsetzung überlebter monarchischer Traditionen ging, sondern im Gegenteil die abhängigen Fürsten durch die auswärtigen Stitungen gezielt ihre Einbindung in das Imperium Romanum, ihre enge Beziehung zum Princeps und ihre eigene Stellung in das römische Machtgefüge kommunizierten.
    Content: Benefactions and donations to cities, communities and sanctuaries outside their own realms were a major instrument of public representation and propaganda for client kings in the early imperial period, emulating the model of most of their Hellenistic predecessors. However, a close analysis of the recipients of the benefactions, their geographical distribution and nature shows that the euergetism of Roman client kings was not simply an imitation or continuation of anachronistic Hellenistic royal practices. Instead, benefactions became an important instrument for the rulers to communicate their integration into the Imperium Romanum, their personal relationship with the Emperor and their own rank in the imperial hierarchy.

Diese ‚Klientelstaaten‘ werden aus römischer wie regionaler Perspektive anhand von Fallbeispielen, aber auch anhand von inhaltlichen Aspekten in den Blick genommen. Es geht dabei nicht um eine abschließende Beantwortung moderner Fragestellungen, sondern um die Förderung eines Dialoges unterschiedlicher Ansätze und Blickwinkel zum Thema ‚Klientelkönigtum‘. Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge, die die generelle Tragfähigkeit des Klientel-Konzepts, Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen dem Osten und Westen des Imperiums und ihre Auswirkungen auf die lokalen Reiche und Gemeinden diskutieren und damit die Entwicklungen ebenso wie die Bandbreite des Instruments der abhängigen Herrschat und ihrer modernen Deutung deutlich machen.
    Content: The Imperium Romanum was not a ‘state’ in the modern sense of the term, being a diffuse formation with varying substructures. This also included the amici et socii: kings, princes, cities, nationes, gentes, who entered into links with Rome of different degrees of closeness. These ‘client states’ are examined both from the Roman and the regional perspective on the basis of case studies from all parts of the Empire, but also by covering different kinds of content. What is important here is to encourage a dialog involving differing approaches and angles on the subject of ‘client kings,’ not a definitive answer to modern questions. The current volume collects contributions which discuss the general viability of the concept of clienthood, differences and similarities between the East and West of the Empire and their repercussions for the local empires and communities, thereby clarifying the developments in and scope of the instrument of dependent rule and its modern interpretation.

    Content: Der Beitrag behandelt das Verhalten der Könige und Fürsten in der römischen Provinz Asia Minor und dem Nahen Osten gegenüber Rom zur Zeit der Bürgerkriege von 49 bis 31 v. Chr. Es wird untersucht, bis zu welchem Grad die Haltung dieser Dynasten typisch für diese Periode des politischen Umbruchs und der Gewalt war. Unter Bezugnahme auf frühere Beispiele kann dargelegt werden, dass das Verhalten dieser anatolischen und nahöstlichen Herrscher Rom gegenüber als eine Fortführung ihrer Handlungen vor dem Jahr 49 angesehen werden kann.
    Content: This contribution deals with the behavior of kings and princes in the Roman province of Asia Minor and the Near East towards Rome during the civil wars of 49 to 31 BC. It examines to what extent the attitude of these rulers was typical of this period of political upheaval and violence. Drawing upon examples from earlier eras, this analysis shows how, to a large degree, the conduct of Anatolian and Near Eastern rulers towards Rome can be regarded as a continuation of their actions prior to 49 BC.
