Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, Under the Hawthorn Tree is the poetically told story of JING, an unpretentious high school senior and city girl who lives her life with extreme caution. Jing and her classmates arrive at a mountain village, where the titular Hawthorn Tree stands as a monument to those who have shed their blood and sacrificed their lives for a greater cause. As Jing meets a young soldier named SUN -- A tall young man in his 20s, Sun is charming, good humored, quick-witted. Sun persists in pursuing Jing by watching her from a distance, shadowing her, offering a helping hand whenever she's in need and appearing at opportune moments. As hard as she tries, she can't fight her attraction to him. As neither one of them dares to fully expose their feelings for one another, especially in public, their relationship is kept at an innocent simmer that only ratchets up the sexual tension
