Content:
A tribute to the journal "Labour Monthly" in honour of its 50th anniversary. Focusses on the struggles of the British Labour Movement 1921-1971, featuring the editors and its famous contributors
Content:
This documentary makes extensive use of satirical cartoons. Editor, R. Page Arnot, discusses miners' wages, intercut with footage of A. J. Cook addressing rallies. Also includes footage of Harry Pollitt addressing workers ahead of the General Strike. Narration covers the expansion of the British Empire and is highly critical of the Labour Party, particularly Ramsay MacDonald and the "National Government". Unemployment statistics are contrasted to scenes of industry. Includes footage of Nazi parades, followed by shots of Japanese soldiers in Manchuria, strife in Ethiopia and the Spanish Civil War. Scenes of Nazi Germany and narration about British appeasement of Hitler, including a short cartoon. Scenes from the Second World War and the "Big Three" at Yalta, followed by a brief political history, including the election of Edward Heath and footage of the stock exchange. Includes a cartoon of Margaret Thatcher and ends with a montage of protests
