Series Statement: NATO ASI Series, Series 2: Environment 29
Content: On behalf of the Russian Federation Committee on Water Economy, I would like to welcome the participants of the NATO-sponsored Workshop on the Problems of the Caspian Sea and the Circum-Caspian States. The world's largest intercontinental sea/lake is well known for its wealth mineral and fuel resources and sturgeon stocks' the products of which (oil and caviar) are in constant demand on the world market. During the last half-century the Caspian Sea has been the focus of the scientific community concerned with its level fluctuations. We were, and still are, solving a two-faceted issue: to rescue the Caspian Sea and to rescue the population from the Caspian Sea. To rescue the Caspian Sea is to address a broad spectrum of environmental issues related primarily to water pollution by waste water and petroleum products. To rescue the population from the Caspian Sea means that an almost 2.5 m sea level rise in the last two decades has resulted in flooding of vast coastal areas deteriorating economic and social spheres of activity. Solutions to these issues are linked to the numerous mysterious aspects of recent Caspian Sea behavior. Regrettably, the collapse of the USSR has led to a decline of marine observations and control over the use of marine resources in the region. Coordinated international action on the protection of living marine resources have terminated, generating disastrous consequences

Content: Environmental degradation in the Aral Sea basin has been a touchstone for increasing public awareness of environmental issues. The Aral crisis has been touted as a 'quiet Chernobyl' and as one of the worst human-made environmental catastrophes of the twentieth century. This multidisciplinary 1999 book comprehensively describes the slow onset of low grade but incremental changes (i.e. creeping environmental change) which affected the region and its peoples. Through a set of case studies, it describes how the region's decision-makers allowed these changes to grow into an environmental and societal nightmare. It outlines many lessons to be learned for other areas undergoing detrimental creeping environmental change, and provides an important example of how to approach such disasters for students and researchers of environmental studies, global change, political science and history
Content: Introduction / Michael H. Glantz -- 1. Sustainable development and creeping environmental problems in the Aral Sea region / Michael H. Glantz -- 2. Ecological disaster linked to landscape composition changes in the Aral Sea basin / Elisabeth A. Vostokova -- 3. Alteration of water level and salinity of the Aral Sea / Vitalyi N. Bortnik -- 4. Desertification in the Aral Sea region / Asomitdin A. Rafikov -- 5. Climate fluctuations and change in the Aral Sea basin within the last 50 years / Alexander N. Zolotokrylin -- 6. Priaralye ecosystems and creeping environmental changes in the Aral Sea / Nina M. Novikova -- 7. Public health in the Aral Sea coastal region and the dynamics of changes in the ecological situation / Leonid I. Elpiner -- 8. The impact of political ideology on creeping environmental changes in the Aral Sea basin / Igor S. Zonn -- 9. Change of the rivers' flow in the Aral Sea basin (in connection with the problem of quantitative assessment and consideration of environmental after-effects) / K. V. Tsytsenko and V. V. Sumarokova -- 10. Fish population as an ecosystem component and economic object in the Aral Sea basin / Iliya Zholdasova -- 11. Creeping environmental changes in the Karakum Canal's zone of impact / Nikolai S. Orlovsky -- 12. Environmental changes in the Uzbek part of the Aral Sea basin / Anatoly N. Krutov -- 13. Content: Over the last 20 years, developments in climatology have provided an amazing array of explanations for the pattern of world climates. This textbook, first published in 2006, examines the earth's climate systems in light of this incredible growth in data availability, data retrieval systems, and satellite and computer applications. It considers regional climate anomalies, developments in teleconnections, unusual sequences of recent climate change, and human impacts upon the climate system. The physical climate forms the main part of the book, but it also considers social and economic aspects of the global climate system. This textbook has been derived from the authors' extensive experience of teaching climatology and atmospheric science. Each chapter contains an essay by a specialist in the field to enhance the understanding of selected topics. An extensive bibliography is included and lists of websites for further study. This textbook will be invaluable to advanced students of climatology and atmospheric science
Content: Oscillations and teleconnections -- Tropical climates -- Middle latitude climates -- Climate of the polar realms -- Post-glacial climatic change and variability -- Urban impacts on climate -- Human response to climate change -- ESSAY : Model interpretation of climate signals : An application to Asian monsoon climate (Lau) -- Conclusions and the future of climate research

Content: As we approach the end of the twentieth century, public and scientific attention is focusing increasingly on the detection and assessment of changes in our environment. This unique volume addresses the potential implications of global warming for fisheries and the societies which depend on them. Using a 'forecasting by analogy' approach, which draws upon experiences from the recent past in coping with regional fluctuations in the abundance or availability of living marine resources, it is shown how we might be able to assess our ability to respond to the consequences of future environmental changes induced by a potential global warming. The book takes the form of a series of integrated case studies from around the globe, which are presented by an interdisciplinary group of leading researchers. This important and thought-provoking volume will be of interest to a wide range of scientists working in the fields of biology, marine and environmental science, climatology, economics and anthropology, as well as resource managers and policy makers concerned with the health and future of living marine resources
