Description: The time-dependent Schroedinger equation for the motion of the electron in a H/sup +/-H collision is solved numerically with a finite-difference method on an axially symmetric spatial mesh. Sample density distributions for E/sub lab/ = 20 keV are shown. The calculated charge-transfer probabilities at E/sub lab/ = 3.92, 7.69, and 20.1 keV are in good agreement with experiment.

Description: β-Si 3 N 4 single crystals with diameters up to 0.5 mm and lengths of several mm were grown from silicon melt in a nitrogen atmosphere. All these needle shaped, colourless and transparent crystals grew in the [00.1] direction and most of them were hollow. observations led to the suggestion, that their prismatic walls were formed by aggregates of fine needles parallel to each other and by subsequent filling of the open space between them. A growth mechanism for pyramidal crystals is suggested.

Description: Secondary ion emission from a beryllium surface is studied in the presence of hydrogen and oxygen. For submonolayer coverages of oxygen, the adsorption follows site-exclusion statistics. On this basis, the Be+ secondary ion yield and energy distribution can be separated into oxygen-development and oxygen-independent processes governed by the local properties of the surface. Ionic molecular species with hydrogen or oxygen present include Be2O+, Be2O--, BeO--, and BeH+ but not BeO+ or BeOH+. This result is inconsistent with emission in which the oxide molecule is formed in the near-surface vacuum region by agglomeration of individually sputtered surface atoms. For BeH+ emission the opposite conclusion is reached. 44 ref.--AA

Description: Flammulina velutipes fruit bodies only grew normally if the pileus remained on the stipe until the end of rapid elongation when about 80% of the final length had been reached. During the same period lamellae alone increased stipe growth significantly compared with total decapitation. The stipes attained three-quarters of the length of intact fruit bodies with only about one-third of all lamellae. Near the end of the normal growth period, the stipe became independent of the pileus and lamellae. Small amounts of lamellae excised during rapid elongation produced diffusate in dilute potato glucose agar which promoted growth of decapitated stipes of the same age. The activity could be detected when fruit bodies had completed two-thirds of their normal growth but was much less than at the onset of rapid elongation. Tests of diffusates from young and old lamellae on stipes of different ages showed that the declining influence of lamellae in aging fruit bodies is associated both with decreasing production of the growth-promoting factor and decreasing response of stipes to an external supply of active diffusate. Neither pilear context nor any part of young or old stipes released growth-promoting diffusate.

    Description: Crystallographic cell volume data are presented for a series of alloys LaNi/sub 5-x/M/sub x/(M = Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) for x = 0 to 0.5. Pressure-composition desorption isotherms were measured for the hydrides of LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Si/sub 0/ /sub 4/ and LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Ge/sub 0/ /sub 4/ at 30, 40, and 60/sup 0/C. From plots of ln P vs. 1/T the enthalpies and entropies of transition were calculated to be -8.5 kcal/mol of H/sub 2/ and -27.3 cal/(mol of H/sub 2/ deg) for LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Si/sub 0/ /sub 4/H/sub y/ and -8.2 kcal/mol of H/sub 2/ and -26.5 cal/(mol of H/sub 2/ deg) for LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Ge/sub 0/ /sub 4/H/sub y/. The thermodynamic quantities as well as the hysteresis behavior of these hydrides are compared to data previously obtained for the hydrides of LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Al/sub 0/ /sub 4/, LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Ga/sub 0/ /sub 4/, LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/In/sub 0/ /sub 4/, and LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Sn/sub 0/ /sub 4/.
