Description: The recent discovery that perovskite-type crystal structures composed of La-Cu oxides substituted with small amounts of alkaline earth cations have exceptionally high superconducting critical temperatures has stimulated much interest in these potentially important materials. The most promising material reported thus far in the literature is La/sub 2-x/Sr/sub x/CuO/sub 4/. The substitution of an alkaline earth for La appears to stabilize a tetragonal structure as apposed to the orthorhombic structure of the parent compound, La/sub 2/CuO/sub 4/. In the work reported to date, the materials were prepared either by sintering mechanical mixtures of the oxides or carbonates or by co-precipitating the oxalates or carbonates with subsequent calcining and sintering steps.

Description: Effects of acetylcholine (ACh) on membrane currents of cells of the motor cortex were measured directly, in vivo, in awake cats using single electode voltage clamp (SEVC) techniques. Extracellular applications (90–95 nA) of 2 M ACh for periods of 30 s or less produced significant decreases in net outward currents by depolarizing commands whereas applications of saline did not. Reductions of net outward currents were also obtained after intracellular pressure injections of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP)-dependent protein kinase (cGPK) mixed with 10 μM cyclic GMP.

Description: Ribosomal total protein from the 30S particle of the archaebacterium Sulfolobus acidocaldarius was isolated by ion-exchange and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic methods. By using a variety of different buffers and columns, six purified proteins were obtained by ion-exchange and up to ten proteins by reversed-phase methods. The separated proteins were tested for homogeneity by sodium dodecyl sulphate or two-dimensional polycarylamide gel electrophoresis. Efforts to determine the N-teminal amino acid sequence of the purified proteins were also initiated. The selectivity and load capacity of reversed-phase chromatography wee increased by the development of a “discontinuous reversed-phase” method. Scale-up to semi-preparative column combinations and re-chromatography of selected fractions under appropriate conditions will increase the number and yield of purified proteins.

Description: Although interpersonal and family theorists have stressed the importance of focusing on the family or marital system, research examining the relationship between stress and depression and somatic health has typically focused on the individual. The purpose of this study was to examine whether information about the couple as a dyad added to our understanding of depressive symptoms and health deficits beyond that obtained by focusing on the individual. We examined dyadic patterns of emotion response among 30 married couples dealing with the same stressful event. Three dyadic patterns were identified. Wives who were disgusted, angry, worried, and fearful while their husbands were not were significantly more depressed than wives in the other two groups, and the husbands were in significantly poorer physical health than husbands in the other two groups. The dyadic patterns added to the variance in these outcomes, above and beyond that provided by the individual's response considered separately. These findings are important in that they suggest that information about the couple as a dyad differs from that obtained with respect to the individual.

Description: Recent studies in a number of laboratories have characterised many of the properties of a major pea albumin (designated PMA or PA2: subunit M∼26 000) which is not readily degraded in the cotyledon upon germination. In the present report, some of the physicochemical properties of this protein have been studied in greater detail. A non‐helical structure, stable at high pH, is evident. Of special significance is the presence of a single free sulphydryl group, although studies reported elsewhere show that the protein consists of four copies of a strongly conserved repeated sequence. It is postulated that this free sulphydryl group in PA2 (5–10% of total pea seed protein) causes polymerisation through disulphide interchange and thereby is a likely source of partial insolubility in protein isolates following an initial alkaline extraction.

Description: The use of picosecond, Q ‐switched lasers and advanced polarization schemes has led to the development of a coherent Raman technique with the sensitivity of coherent anti‐Stokes Raman spectroscopy experiments but without the troublesome phase‐matching requirements. Experiments in dilute solutions of benzene indicate a limit of sensitivity for the current apparatus of 2.5×10 − 4 M in two minutes of signal averaging over 150 cm − 1 . Possible applications to the i n s i t u study of passive films and thin films on transparent media are discussed.

Description: Turner syndrome (TUS) in girls causes sex chromosome abnormalities, ovarian dysgenesis with estrogen deficiency, and short stature. The goal of this study was to assess the long-term effects of sex chromosome and hormonal anomalies on female gender role development. The authors report data from an interview assessing gender role development in 23 TUS women, compared with 23 closely matched women with constitutional short stature and with 10 normal sisters of the TUS women. The results show more stereotypic feminine behavior in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in the TUS subjects. The authors conclude that the clinical features of TUS do not impede normal female gender development. Furthermore, the data suggest that the tendency to greater femininity in TUS women cannot be explained solely by short stature and may be related to other psychosocial, endocrine, or brain effects of the syndrome.

Description: Measurements have been made of the solvation forces between mica surfaces in the even‐numbered n ‐alkanes from hexane to hexadecane. In all cases the force law is qualitatively very similar, characterized by a decaying oscillatory function of distance, as occurs for simple isotropic liquids. The spacing between successive minima in the force does not increase with carbon number, and is comparable to the width of a linear alkane molecule rather than its length or any average diameter. This suggests that the alkanes have some tendency towards a parallel orientation near the mica surfaces. The measurements give no indication of any strong repulsive component expected from mean‐field theories of higher alkanes or polymers. The results of one such theory are presented, and the reasons for its failure to match the experimental data are discussed.

Description: There are several reasons to expect that the use of calcium antagonists to treat cardiovascular disease will continue to spread. The scope of indications for existing calcium antagonists is expanding; new calcium antagonists with more selective organ affinity are being developed and these drugs may be given over the long term for prophylaxis against hypertension and for vasoprotection. In all probability, the long-term prophylactic use of calcium antagonists offers the most promise. The long-term effects of calcium antagonists for treating hypertension as well as for preventing vascular damage due to calcinosis and sclerosis will be discussed.
