Description: Automata with a restart Operation define a special class of rewrite (reduction) systems which has a close relation to the dependency syntax of natural languages. We impose a natural condition of monotonocity and introduce a hierarchical structure of several versions of such automata. The language classes recognized by these automata form a proper hierarchy, with the class of context-free languages on the top, and with the class of deterministic context-free languages on the bottom. In particular, the deterministic monotonic versions of all the introduced automata recognize the same class of languages -- namely that of deterministic context-free languages....

Description: One of the most widely used buzzwords in mobile communications of the recent years is Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA). The introduction of an additional space domain multiple access component is likely to boost system capacity, due to the spatial reuse of physical channels within one cell. While early approaches of SDMA system modelling show capacity to be gained in the order of 300 to 400%, there remains some more in depth system analysis to be done, as inhomogeneities in the user distribution are expected to likely cause dramatic drops in the additional capacity gained by SDMA. The spatial distribution of terminals directly influences the number of channels to be gained by spatial multiplexing. Therefore, it is not until detailed models for user distribution, user mobility and the traffic load generated by users are combined with a model of the SDMA radio subsystem, that realistic approximations for these capacity gains are possible. In this paper, we discuss the issues in modelling and simulation of SDMA systems. We present an approach for integrated SDMA system modelling, discuss analytic teletraffic dimensioning methods for macro- and microcellular environments and their relevance to SDMA systems, and present some early simulation results.

Description: has made it possible to immobilize peptide recognition sites on a template attached to a gold surface. Each of the seven individual reaction steps, including the final functional biomolecular recognition, was controlled in situ with surface‐sensitive detection techniques. The presented strategy is of general importance for the formation of complex supramolecular structures with biologically interesting functionalities at the interfaces.

Description: Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is a commonly used chelating agent. Its antiviral, antibacterial and immunomodulatory effects are well documented. DTPA forms a highly stable complex with lead (II) with an increased absorption coefficient and a bathochromic shift of the absorption maximum compared to pure DTPA. Based on this complex a high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the quantitative detection of DTPA in biological fluids was developed. A calibration curve was prepared and linearity was shown in the concentration range between 10 mg l(-1) and 1000 mg l(-1) DTPA. The recovery in water and in human plasma showed the method to be suitable for routine use.

Description: PURPOSE: The expression of the carcinoma-associated mucin MUC-1 is thought to be restricted to epithelial cells and is used for micrometastatic tumor cell detection in patients with solid tumors, including those with breast cancer. Little is known, however, about the expression of MUC-1 epitopes in normal hematopoietic cells.MATERIALS AND METHODS: MUC-1 expression was analyzed by flow cytometry and immunocytology on bone marrow (BM) mononuclear cells and purified CD34+ cells from healthy volunteers, using different anti-MUC-1-specific monoclonal antibodies. In addition, Western blotting of MUC-1 proteins was performed.RESULTS: Surprisingly, 2% to 10% of normal human BM mononuclear cells expressed MUC-1, as defined by the anti-MUC-1 antibodies BM-2 (2E11), BM-7, 12H12, MAM-6, and HMFG-1. In contrast, two antibodies recognizing the BM-8 and the HMFG-2 epitopes of MUC-1 were not detected. MUC-1+ cells from normal BM consisted primarily of erythroblasts and normoblasts. In agreement with this, normal CD34+ cells cultured in vitro to differentiate into the erythroid lineage showed a strong MUC-1 expression on day 7 proerythroblasts. Western blotting of these cells confirmed that the reactive species is the known high molecular weight MUC-1 protein.CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that some MUC-1 epitopes are expressed on normal BM cells and particularly on cells of the erythroid lineage. Hence the application of anti-MUC-1 antibodies for disseminated tumor cell detection in BM or peripheral blood progenitor cells may provide false-positive results, and only carefully evaluated anti-MUC-1 antibodies (eg, HMFG-2) might be selected. Furthermore, MUC-1-targeted immunotherapy in cancer patients might be hampered by the suppression of erythropoiesis.
