Content: Continental rift systems open up unique possibilities to study the geodynamic system of our planet: geodynamic localization processes are imprinted in the morphology of the rift by governing the time-dependent activity of faults, the topographic evolution of the rift or by controlling whether a rift is symmetric or asymmetric. Since lithospheric necking localizes strain towards the rift centre, deformation structures of previous rift phases are often well preserved and passive margins, the end product of continental rifting, retain key information about the tectonic history from rift inception to continental rupture. Current understanding of continental rift evolution is based on combining observations from active rifts with data collected at rifted margins. Connecting these isolated data sets is often accomplished in a conceptual way and leaves room for subjective interpretation. Geodynamic forward models, however, have the potential to link individual data sets in a quantitative manner, using additional constraints from rock mechanics and rheology, which allows to transcend previous conceptual models of rift evolution. ...

Content: After a severe M W 5.7 earthquake on October 17, 2015 in El Galpón in the province of Salta NW Argentina, I installed a local seismological network around the estimated epicenter. The network covered an area characterized by inherited Cretaceous normal faults and neotectonic faults with unknown recurrence intervals, some of which may have been reactivated normal faults. The 13 three-component seismic stations recorded data continuously for 15 months. The 2015 earthquake took place in the Santa Bárbara System of the Andean foreland, at about 17km depth. This region is the easternmost morphostructural region of the central Andes. As a part of the broken foreland, it is bounded to the north by the Subandes fold-and-thrust belt and the Sierras Pampeanas to the south; to the east lies the Chaco-Paraná basin. A multi-stage morphotectonic evolution with thick-skinned basement uplift and coeval thin-skinned deformation in the intermontane basins is suggested for the study area. The release of stresses associated with the foreland ...

Content: Localisation of deformation is a ubiquitous feature in continental rift dynamics and observed across drastically different time and length scales. This thesis comprises one experimental and two numerical modelling studies investigating strain localisation in (1) a ductile shear zone induced by a material heterogeneity and (2) in an active continental rift setting. The studies are related by the fact that the weakening mechanisms on the crystallographic and grain size scale enable bulk rock weakening, which fundamentally enables the formation of shear zones, continental rifts and hence plate tectonics. Aiming to investigate the controlling mechanisms on initiation and evolution of a shear zone, the torsion experiments of the experimental study were conducted in a Patterson type apparatus with strong Carrara marble cylinders with a weak, planar Solnhofen limestone inclusion. Using state-of-the-art numerical modelling software, the torsion experiments were simulated to answer questions regarding localisation procedure like stress distribution or the impact of rheological weakening. 2D numerical models were also employed to integrate geophysical and geological data to explain characteristic tectonic evolution of the Southern and Central Kenya Rift. Content: Forming as a result of the collision between the Adriatic and European plates, the Alpine orogen exhibits significant lithospheric heterogeneity due to the long history of interplay between these plates, other continental and oceanic blocks in the region, and inherited features from preceeding orogenies. This implies that the thermal and rheological configuration of the lithosphere also varies significantly throughout the region. Lithology and temperature/pressure conditions exert a first order control on rock strength, principally via thermally activated creep deformation and on the distribution at depth of the brittle-ductile transition zone, which can be regarded as the lower bound to the seismogenic zone. Therefore, they influence the spatial distribution of seismicity within a lithospheric plate. In light of this, accurately constrained geophysical models of the heterogeneous Alpine lithospheric configuration, are crucial in describing regional deformation patterns. However, despite the amount of research focussing on the area, ...

Content: Magmatic continental rifts often constitute the earliest stage of nascent plate boundaries. These extensional tectonic provinces are characterized by ubiquitous normal faulting and volcanic activity; the spatial pattern, the geometry, and the age of these normal faults can help to unravel the spatiotemporal relationships between extensional deformation, magmatism, and long-wavelength crustal deformation of continental rift provinces. This study focuses on the active faulting in the Kenya Rift of the Cenozoic East African Rift System (EARS) with a focus on the mid-Pleistocene to the present-day. To examine the early stages of continental break-up in the EARS, this thesis presents a time-averaged minimum extension rate for the inner graben of the Northern Kenya Rift (NKR) for the last 0.5 m.y. Using the TanDEM-X digital elevation model, fault-scarp geometries and associated throws are determined across the volcano-tectonic axis of the inner graben of the NKR. By integrating existing geochronology of faulted units with new ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar ...

Content: Submarine landslides can generate local tsunamis posing a hazard to human lives and coastal facilities. Two major related problems are: (i) quantitative estimation of tsunami hazard and (ii) early detection of the most dangerous landslides. This thesis focuses on both those issues by providing numerical modeling of landslide-induced tsunamis and by suggesting and justifying a new method for fast detection of tsunamigenic landslides by means of tiltmeters. Due to the proximity to the Sunda subduction zone, Indonesian coasts are prone to earthquake, but also landslide tsunamis. The aim of the GITEWS-project (German-Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System) is to provide fast and reliable tsunami warnings, but also to deepen the knowledge about tsunami hazards. New bathymetric data at the Sunda Arc provide the opportunity to evaluate the hazard potential of landslide tsunamis for the adjacent Indonesian islands. I present nine large mass movements in proximity to Sumatra, Java, Sumbawa and Sumba, whereof the largest event displaced 20 kmđ of sediments. Using numerical modeling, I compute the generated tsunami of each event, its propagation and runup at the coast. Moreover, I investigate the age of the largest slope failures by relating them to the Great 1977 Sumba earthquake ...
