Description:
An epic stalemate between the Democrat-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives resulted in a partial shutdown of the U.S. government on 1 October. The shutdown paralyzed science funding agencies, stalled government-run science projects, and sent more than 800,000 federal workers home from their jobs. But a select few scientists deemed essential to government functions are still at work, including physicists tending an atomic clock, biomedical researchers taking care of laboratory mice, and an expert on bird identification.
