    Description: Gamma-interferon-inducible lysosomal thiolreductase (GILT) promotes major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-restricted presentation of exogenous antigens containing disulfide bonds. Here, we show that GILT also facilitates MHC class I-restricted recognition of such antigens by CD8+ T cells, or cross-presentation. GILT is essential for cross-presentation of a CD8+ T cell epitope of glycoprotein B (gB) from herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) but not for its presentation by infected cells. Initiation of the gB-specific CD8+ T cell response during HSV-1 infection, or cross-priming, is highly GILT-dependent, as is initiation of the response to the envelope glycoproteins of influenza A virus. Efficient cross-presentation of disulfide-rich antigens requires a complex pathway involving GILT-mediated reduction, unfolding, and partial proteolysis, followed by translocation into the cytosol for proteasomal processing.

    Description: In our view, synthetic biology is an extension of the continuum of genetic science that has been used safely for more than 40 years by the biotechnology industry in the development of commercial products. Examples of synthetic biology use by biotechnology companies illustrate the potential to substantially reduce research and development time and to increase speed to market. Improvements in the speed and cost of DNA synthesis are enabling scientists to design modified bacterial chromosomes that can be used in the production of renewable chemicals, biofuels, bioproducts, renewable specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, fine chemicals, food ingredients, and health care products. Regulatory options should support innovation and commercial development of new products while protecting the public from potential harms.

    Description: We observe the excitation and tuning of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by the interference between different excitation pathways of the dark mode in a planar terahertz metamaterial. The EIT unit cell consists of a cut wire as the bright resonator and a pair of split ring resonators (SRRs) as the dark element. The dark mode resonance is excited by both the electric and magnetic fields when the SRR pair translates along the wire without altering the lateral distance between the resonators. The electric and magnetic pathways of exciting the dark mode allows for a giant amplitude modulation of the EIT resonance.

    Description: Electrochemical deposition of ZnO nanorods having a diameter of 80–150 nm and length ~ 2 μm has been carried out. Au particles were sputtered on the ZnO nanorods for different sputtering times (from 0 to 100 s). The Photoluminescence spectra of bare ZnO nanorods showed a weak bandgap emission at around 375 nm and a broad defect-related emission band centered at ~ 596 nm. After the Au sputtering, the defect-related emission disappeared for all the samples. Moreover, the band edge emission intensity was enhanced with Au sputtering time 50 s. The enhancement factor reached a maximum value for the Au sputtering time of 50 s The enhancement in band edge emission is due to the transfer of electrons from defect states to the Au nanoparticles that cause not only an increase of resonant electron density, but also creates energetic electrons in the higher energy states. These resonant electrons can escape from the surface of the Au nanoparticles to conduction band of ZnO nanorods leading to the suppression of defect related emission intensity.

    Description: Palladium selenides, PdSe, Pd Se and PdSe have been prepared by the hydrothermal method and investigated for their structural and electrocatalytic properties toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) using SEM/TEM, XRD, cyclic and linear sweep voltammetries. The crystallites of PdSe and PdSe are found to follow tetragonal and orthorhombic crystal structures, respectively. The PdSe electrode in 0.5 M H SO exhibits significantly higher electrocatalytic activity than the Pd Se or PdSe electrode under similar experimental conditions. Further, a change in the palladium/selenium ratio from unity in the catalyst results in low ORR activity. ► In this study we prepare palladium selenides (PdSe, Pd Se and PdSe ) by using hydrothermal method. ► The prepared catalysts were investigated for oxygen reduction reaction. ► Among prepared catalysts PdSe were found to be most active than Pd Se and PdSe . ► The prepared catalysts have excellence tolerance for methanol oxidation reaction. ► PdSe can be used as a potential methanol tolerant cathode for the ORR in methanol fuel cells.

    Description: In this article, we develop theoretical and empirical linkages between corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of business organizations and their market development efforts at the bottom of the pyramid (BOP). We use qualitative in-depth interviews of 21 CSR heads of business organizations and its CSR partner organizations in India (an emerging market) to explore, develop, and explain plausible theoretical linkages between CSR initiatives of the organizations and its market development efforts at BOP using theory of market separations. Using theoretical frameworks from CSR literature and sub-theory of market separations from marketing literature, the study suggests that market development at BOP is enhanced using the CSR route in several ways. These are, (1) making the BOP market development less risky, (2) mask the CSR initiative as a BOP pilot project to generate internal traction within the organization, (3) integrating the BOP communities with the last mile of the supply chain of the organization, (4) bringing government intervention to accelerate scale-up, and (5) developing BOP as future markets for consumers and supply chain partners to make business more sustainable. Our study has several theoretical as well as managerial implications linking organizations’ market development efforts at BOP with its CSR initiatives.

Mango ginger ( ) a spice of high usage in pickles, sauce, culinary formulations and traditional/folk systems of medicine for therapeutic actions in Asian countries. After establishing scheme for isolation and characterisation of labdane diterpene dialdehyde [labda-8(17), 12-diene-15, 16-dial]-an anti-tubercular agent, we developed a new validated HPLC-PDA method for its quantification in Chromatography was performed with reverse phase column in isocratic condition at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min using mobile phase of acidified water and acetonitrile. Specificity of determination was achieved with UV (190–400 nm) and mass spectrum. Good linearity was obtained with correlation coefficients 〉0.99. In the analytical range the precision and accuracy (RSD%) values were ⩽2%. Present validated method allowed both the identification and determination of labda-8(17), 12-diene-15, 16-dial, in rhizome. The method was applied to screen the labdane diterpene dialdehyde in the samples of different geographic locations.
