Content: Connu depuis longtemps, l’exceptionnel complexe thermal de Cefalà, qui met en valeur une source chaude naturelle située à 30 km au sud de Palerme, n’avait jamais fait jusqu’à présent l’objet d’une étude systématique et interdisciplinaire qui exploite en particulier les données archéologiques recueillies lors des fouilles menées dans les années 1990 et 2000. Les résultats de la recherche menée sous l’égide de l’École française de Rome et en collaboration avec la Surintendance de Palerme à partir de 2003 ont permis de préciser la chronologie des bains, dont les origines oscillaient jusqu’ici entre Antiquité et époque normande, et d’éclairer pour la première fois leur articulation initiale avec le site au sein duquel ils se trouvaient. Construit à partir du Xe siècle sous la dynastie régionale kalbide dans le contexte de la Sicile fatimide, monumentalisé par la dynastie des Hauteville au milieu du XIIe siècle, le complexe a connu une utilisation et une fréquentation ininterrompue et en constante évolution jusqu’au XXe siècle, avant d’être étudié et protégé. Ses transformations reflètent celles qu’a connues la société sicilienne au cours du Moyen Âge et notamment l’effacement progressif du contexte islamique initial, puis la féodalisation tardo-médiévale et enfin la redécouverte du complexe par les érudits de l’époque moderne. Cet ouvrage synthétise nos connaissances actuelles sur ce témoin des origines islamiques d’une partie du patrimoine thermal, mais aussi architectural et plus largement culturel, sicilien et éclaire ainsi d’une lumière nouvelle l’histoire du Palermitain médiéval, mais aussi celle du thermalisme.

Content: Conquering Sicily from the middle of the 11th century, Hauteville are the first to set up a government that is defined as a Christian and, at least in part, from Latin, while exercising its prerogatives at a predominantly Muslim population, Arabic speaking. To do this, they gradually developed instruments of government, but also became the patrons of a cultural production that has aroused admiration and comments until today. This work is presented as an investigation into the different dimensions of the power of Hauteville from the conquest of Sicily at the end of the 12th century (language policy, state building, patronage, but also control of populations and territory). It aims to demystify the representations that we often have of this long century of "tolerance", but also to deconstruct the idea that the failure of the dynasty was written in advance. He nevertheless postulates that the "Norman" construction in Sicily remains original and innovative and that it provides useful elements of comparison for all those who analyze situations of conquest and minority government in a multicultural context.

Content: Le XXXIXe congrès de la Société des historiens médiévistes de l'Enseignement supérieur public s'est tenu, en avril-mai 2008, dans une capitale orientale, Le Caire, pour faire dialoguer ensemble orientalistes et « occidentalistes » et rappeler que la richesse culturelle de l'Orient et de l'Occident au Moyen Âge vient non seulement des héritages communs, mais aussi du dialogue et des échanges qui n'ont cessé durant le millénaire médiéval. Ce volume, intitulé L'autorité de l'écrit au Moyen Age, traite tout à la fois de la production de l'écrit, de l'autorité du document et de la constitution d'archives dans l'Occident médiéval comme dans les mondes byzantin et musulman. Il envisage en premier lieu la place de l'écrit dans les sociétés où la parole et le geste sont essentiels, considérant les groupes qui ont pour métier d'écrire (rédacteurs, clercs de chancellerie, cadis...), étudiant leurs pratiques et la diffusion des techniques d'écritures mises en œuvre. L'usage de l'écrit conduit à la question de l'autorité du document produit et de son efficacité : l'écrit et les gestes enregistrés, les signes de validation, la qualité des personnes qui le présentent et celle des témoins qui le souscrivent, les choix linguistiques multiples adoptés par les rédacteurs, les situations dans lesquelles le document a été utilisé, même pour le falsifier. Dans le monde musulman par exemple, où la fiabilité de témoins intègres est supérieure à celle d'un document écrit, potentiellement falsifiable, on comprend que le statut du document écrit, son aptitude à faire preuve, soit moindre qu'en Occident où c'est une de ses premières fonctions. La constitution et la conservation d'archives sont au cœur des enjeux de pouvoir : à qui est confiée la garde des documents et dans quels lieux ? Content: L’enquête menée sur la perception des conversions à l’islam dans la littérature historique des XIXe et XXe siècles a abouti à la publication d’une bibliographie raisonnée, parue dans la collection Mondes méditerranéens et balkaniques de l’École française d’Athènes, en 2011 (MMB 3). Les études réunies reviennent sur les contextes micrasiatiques ou balkaniques et examinent d’autres situations culturelles et temporelles : les débuts de l’islam, la Syrie des XVIIe-XIXe siècles, la péninsule indienne, l’archipel insulindien, sans oublier les modalités spécifiques aux groupes juifs (marranes, morisques, dönme-s). Research on how conversions to Islam were perceived in the historical literature of the 19th and 20th centuries resulted in the publication of an annotated bibliography in 2011 as part of the Mondes méditerranéens et balkaniques series of the French School at Athens (MMB 3). Continuing the ongoing discussion of the Seljuk and Ottoman eras in Asia Minor and the Balkans, eleven historians and humanities specialists, participants in a 2012 conference, consider conversion to Islam from a range of different perspectives, in different periods. The articles in this collection reconsider the Asia Minor and Balkan contexts and look at other cultures and time periods, such as the beginnings of Islam, Syria during the 17th-19th centuries, the Indian peninsula, and the Insulindian archipelago, while also paying attention to processes specific to Jewish groups (Marranos, Moriscos and Dönme-s).

Content: Studies on human mobility are often concerned with the importance of immigration. The studies in this book deal with the adverse aspects of immigration, the emigration, as well as the itinerancy which has been a way of life for numerous groups of people. By following the movement of people, this book aims, more precisely, at examining the procedures for its control and their logic, and its representations in past societies. Emigration and itinerancy are exceptional laboratories for analyzing ways of managing the migratory flow, because they really challenge the social structures and the political institutions, put in place by stable populations. These articles show how sedentariness and mobility complement each other, and invite to reflect on the concept and practice of freedom of movement. Les travaux sur la circulation des personnes ont souvent privilégié l'immigration ; les études réunies dans ce volume concernent son avers, l'émigration, ainsi que l'itinérance qui constitue le mode de vie de populations entières. Il s'agit plus précisément, en suivant le mouvement des hommes, d'examiner les procédures mises en place pour l'encadrer et les logiques qui les sous-tendent, et d'en explorer les représentations dans les sociétés du passé. L'émigration et l'itinérance sont des laboratoires exceptionnels pour analyser les modes de gestion des flux migratoires, parce qu'elles semblent mettre en question les structures sociales et les institutions, construites du point de vue des populations stables. Cet ouvrage montre les complémentarités bien réelles de la sédentarité et du mouvement et invite à réfléchir sur les conditions de possibilité de la liberté de circuler.
