Die hier versammelten, von Alan Lee mit zartem Strich stimmungsvoll illustrierten Geschichten und Gedichte sind zwar keine Neuentdeckungen, als Wiederbegegnungen aber von hohem Reiz. Ob es sich um die im Umkreis des "Herrn der Ringe" zählenden "Abenteuer des Tom Bombadil" (BA 7/84) handelt, um das komisch-heroische Märchen "Bauer Giles von Ham" oder um den "Schmied von Großholzingen" und seine Begegnungen im Elbenland - beide auch in "Fabelhafte Geschichten" (BA 1/76) oder um die wahrhaft fantastischen Erlebnisse des in ein Spielzeugtier verwandelten Hundes Roverandum - Tolkien erweist sich auch bei erneuter Lektüre dieser Erzählungen als unangefochtener Meister. Eindrucksvolle Traumwelten, farbige Landschaftsbilder und "zauberhafte" Abenteuer zu Lande, zur See und auf dem Mond machen den Band (s. auch das Hörbuch in dieser Nr.) für Jung und Alt gleichermaßen empfehlenswert.
